Hey Joe: Ranking Mark Dantonio's seven best players at MSU
I'm not really a big fan of Rexrode but I'll post it anyway.
1. Kirk Cousins
2. Darqueze Dennard
3. Max Bullough
4. Greg Jones
5. Denicos Allen
6. Javon Ringer
7. B.J. Cunningham, Keshawn Martin
LINK
I would put Queze over Cousins, as I was never a big Cousins guy. Thought he choked at times. Cook delivers with some attitude. Denicos at #5? Eh. No Bell?
Cook will be #1 after next year.

Love Denicos, but I'd take him off in favor of Bell

Re: Hey Joe: Ranking Mark Dantonio's seven best players at MSU
Cousins will probably be at or near the top, regardless of how much winning or 'choking' he did. He probably had just as much to do with the turnaround of MSU football as Coach D does. Jones and Ringer had to buy into the program but where only around for a year or 2. Cousins brought the program together and was kind of the glue guy on offense. I think that is why you will see him at #1, and probably for a long time. I'm saying all of this before reading the article.
If you base it strictly on W/L column and awards, I agree that Darqueze should be #1, but I can see why Cousins is up there. Joe is also much closer to the program than I am, and probably most of us here, so he would be able to see first hand how much influence Cousins has had over the program.

I was surprised to see Bell omitted from even the honorable mentions list. Overall though, hard to argue with Rexrode's take on things.

#1 should be Connor Cook right now; not in a year. He delivered a Rose Bowl victory.

He wasn't snubbed from HM, though I almost missed it as well. Read the last two lines before the "Honorable Mention" part. Joe lists Bell and Worthy as the two biggest snubs

Cousins helped get rid of the SOS moniker of MSU Football. He was consistent and very rarely got into trouble. What if CC leads this team to a 7-5 record this year? I'd like to see his full body of work before naming him #1.Giant Moose wrote:#1 should be Connor Cook right now; not in a year. He delivered a Rose Bowl victory.

When it's all said and done, I think Calhoun could make the Top 7 with a strong season and a high draft pick. He is a monster.

What about Will Gholston? I guess I'd have him right out there at #8.
His work of twisting Dennards loose helmet and punching Lewan in the face was priceless.

I'd probably have Hoyer at #9. Guy started the Spartan domination over the Wolverines.

Totally agree. Worthy was way more impactful than GregJonesGregJones, as much as I loved 53. Bell also deserves a spot.
That said, and I'm surprised I'm the first one to point it out - notice anything common about the guys on his list? Something you can't say about Worthy or Bell?
Makes sense.

I think Dennard might be the best player I have seen at MSU period. It is tough to argue in football where there are so many different positions that impact the game in different ways. I can see Cousins as #1 being the qb that took MSU towards elite level. If Cook's next two years are anything like last year then he will be #1 in that regard.

I find it odd that Ringer, as much as I loved the guy, would be on this list since he wasn't recruited by Dantonio. I know that wasn't really one of the criteria, but still.

I don't know, Greg Jones had a few games that I recall against UofM and Wisconsin where the dude would just stuff the run up the middle on those teams. I thought he was huge, and his coming back a 4th year really set the tone for the type of program and family type atmosphere we have now.

Also, Bullough should be lower. I think the Rose Bowl victory, especially the way that we won, showed that the team was OK without him.
