Probably sounded like a great idea to play Miami and BYU when we were at our peak in 2014 when those games were scheduled.

Clemson at 57 seems kinda high.
maybe they should schedule the North Greenville School of Cosmotology and Telephone Repair to enhance their ACC-riddled schedule.

Who the hell are BYU and Miami playing that makes their schedule so easy?

We may lose a lot of games, but at least we will put their fans to sleep with 7-6 grudge match.

Or we win 9-7. Let's try to be a little optimistic for once.

How about we win one 2-0? I think that would warrant running out onto the field.

I'm fine with beating OSU or UM 2-0.

The strength of schedule is surpassed only by the strength of the coaching staff
12-0
12-0

Re: 2020 Strength of Football Schedule - Bring it on!
What the hell are those rankings based on?
Non conference opponents - 2019 record
BYU - 7-6 (including wins against UMass, Liberty & Idaho St)
Miami - 6-7 (including wins Bethune Cookman & CMU)
Toledo - 6-6 (including wins against Murry St, Colorado St and BYU)
cross over games against Northwestern, Iowa and Minnesota
and Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Penn St and Ohio St (in inverse order of good teams)
That is 6 or 7 bad teams (not including MSU), 3-4 tossup games (which the Spartans didn't win in 2019 and 2 big underdog games.
Home games are Northwestern, Toledo, Miami, Michy, OSU, Minny, Buttgers
Not exactly murderers row (though it is 5 of the top 6 B1G teams from 2019)

shhhhh, when we go 10-2, we'll still get in based on the schedule.

it's hard because those are other D1 football teams and MSU can't score more than 7 points a game

Yep, by todays standards that is strong. When I was a kid we played USC 2x in the season, ND, OSU and Michigan. Now that was a schedule.

that's interesting, since the season you cited featured "competitive" scores of 31-8, 31-3, 38-0, 45-3, 27-3, and 30-9.

Re: 2020 Strength of Football Schedule - Bring it on!
Okay - The Athletic just did their final rankings 1 (LSU) - 130 (Akron) for 2019, and here is how MSU's schedule rates
(disclaimer - I hate ranking 2020 based on 2019 as teams change, but right now it's all we have to go on)
115 - Northwestern
56 - BYU
100 - Toledo
72 - Miami (Fl) (fwiw - Miami(OH) is rated 67
19 - Iowa
18 - Michigan
3 - Ohio St
38 - Indiana
9 - Minnesota
10 - Penn St
118 - Rutgers
104 - Maryland
I can see how that appears to be tougher than I thought it was, although the non-conference is fairly week but no Division II, or III or NAIA or the Albion Flight school.

Against traditional powers like that yeah I'm on board with it. Our team was beating teams with NFL talent not much you can do outside of that. I mean that's part of it too, you want to see your team vs good talent.

this is a pointless argument (virtually every big ten team has NFL talent somewhere), but the Perles Rose Bowl team played in a big ten that only had three teams finish in the top 25 (including MSU) and got its ass kicked by the two top 10 OOC teams it played.

The one or two NFL players that are on Rutgers or Illinois don't really move the needle for me. People want to see their team vs top flight talent and big brands of the sport. There's a reason why those types of games draw in bigger ratings and the value of tickets are higher. My argument is that back then there used to be more of those types of games scheduled every year.
