Watching cars sit on the track for an hour makes for an exciting last 15 laps

Newman finishes 4th in a flaming car that’s on its roof.
Hamlin over Blaney in a photo finish. Joe Gibbs has had a spectacular second act as a NASCAR team owner / manager

Re: Daytoner 2020
I gotta bad feeling. He hit the wall hard, but worse was the shot he took on the driver door/roof. Looked like the roof collapsed. Them cutting away suggests he's still in the car.

Re: Daytoner 2020
Not a huge NASCAR fan but remembered they were racing about 6:30.
The Big One occured on lap 16 then several more wrecks in the typical Daytona war of attrition.
Newman’s crash is one of the worst I have seen in at least 5 years. Rarely see cars go airborne anymore because of design changes. Fox only showed the wreck a couple times and the drivers cage was fully involved.

So they wear the Hans invented at MSU. They have state of the art crumple zones where the car collapsed during impact to absorb the shock(you can see that) they have state of the art roll cages. But what saved him from the side impact T-bone? That’s what had made me sick to my stomach.

all that's missing is a few bible verses, some processed meat stix advertising and a subtle nod to white supremacy.

Happy to see it, but ain’t no way I’m walking around and out of a hospital only in socks. Nasty. I’d at least leave them on the ground before getting in my car.

If that guy walked out of the hospital naked playing jump rope with his Johnson, I'd be happy to see it. Not kidding, he might be immortal. I thought he was dead.
I was at the Derby when eight bells broke her legs crossing the finish line. Worse yet, we had finally moved up in seats where we were in a box about 20 yards behind the finish line. Worst stadium sound I had ever been in. Just gruesome. I mean I never thought 150K people could be stone quiet. You could hear the equine ambulance's tires on the dirt driving up. Wanted to puke. I can't imagine being in that stadium not knowing, thinking of the Dale Ernhardt crash. Must have been a horrible feeling.

I remember when Earnhardt hit the wall. The image that I recall is Dale Jr. running toward his Dad's car (he was wearing shoes) - this many years later, that's the image that sticks out to me.

Re: Daytoner 2020
Good to see Newman walk out of the hospital with his daughters.
What we won’t see is how the brain trauma changes the regular routine. Almost 20 years ago a girl we know was playing softball for her HS team. She was hit in the head by a thrown ball just below the base of her helmet and nearly knocked unconscious. Within 24 -48 hours hypersensitivity to light and high frequency sounds started. Took nearly 6-7 months of being in low light or dark rooms and she didn’t return to classes at school until the following winter term.
Walking out of hospital is a start but Newman has a long road to recovery.
NBC Sports had reported and posted tweets from Newman and his wife announcing their separation after 16 years and requested privacy for their daughters. It’s been a tough 10 days for those kids. Mom and dad make their separation public and then they know their father’s accident put him in the hospital.
