MSU requiring Sophomores to live on campus starting in ‘22
Off-campus housing is going to take a huge hit from this.

Rolling back the clock on that. Pretty sure when it was mandatory when I was a soph in 79-80.
Also, see roc's post.

Definite money grab. Put on your noise canceling headphones, Bob, cuz it’s going to get loud in here.

If a sophomore were to ask me my opinion, which they of course wouldn’t because I’m an old man who has never even used a ticy tocy, I would advise living in the dorms for two years anyway as a critical component of the college experience. 2 years on, 2-3 off. This is the way.

I hated the dorms. I might have dropped out if I had been required to stay in the dorms an extra year. I need my space. Living in a house/apartment with others was great. But fuck the dorms.

This.
When did they change it? It was two years in the 90s. I just assumed it still was.

You are correct. Spent 78-79 in the dorm. Actually worked out pretty good. They kicked all us off our half of the floor after freshmen year to make 5E coed. Bunch of us moved to 5W for sophomore year and had a blast. Won the Big Ten (no Rose Bowl), the b-ball championship, and met some cool people. Was way more fun having a sister floor.Floyd Robertson wrote:Rolling back the clock on that. Pretty sure when it was mandatory when I was a soph in 79-80.

I agree with this. Because I transferred in and lived locally, I wasn’t required to live on campus. I was relieved because, after seeing dorm life through my siblings time on campus, I didn’t want to stay in a dorm. But I learned to regret the decision. I saw the bonds of friendship that were formed during those first two years that carried all the way through school and continue today.
Edit: Living with a lot of other people from different backgrounds, who live different lives, carry on at different hours, all teaches understanding and, ideally, respect. You recognize that your way isn’t the only way. If you let yourself do it, you learn to think of others before thinking of yourself. How will certain conduct affect other people?
Then there’s guys like Turtleneck, who is just a selfish load.

Look, if they can make it cost-effective and not gouge the shit out of these students who are already paying too much for tuition, I’d be a lot less skeptical. I guess we’ll see the plan, but I’m doubtful it isn’t just some bullshit.

I have no problem with it. The slumlords won't like it, but the immediate downtown area will see a nice benefit from this and the students will experience more campus culture.
Win/win.

Maybe it’s the U’s attempt to restore In loco parentis. So, a morality grab instead of a money grab.
Just kidding. This is all about the Benjamins.

Re: MSU requiring Sophomores to live on campus starting in ‘22
Explosion of off campus residences has the potential of making MSU a short travel commuter school if predictions of reduced students post COVID-19 come to pass.
Maybe the relatively few owners of student housing will have to sell some properties, reduce rates or have to hold off until Jan 30 for their sign next school year lease.
Funny how it’s a money grab when public institutions like MSU require on campus residence. MSU has invested millions in upgrades to dorms and cafeterias, new campus apartments and isn’t going to shutdown dorms losing lower level undergrads leaving campus.
The best thing from a parent’s perspective from having my youngest n MSU dorms then MSU owned apartments for 4 years was no 8-24 hour waits for maintanance if required and no infighting about paying for utility bills/internet/cable. All included set the AC in a Fall Indian summer or early spring heatwave to as cold as needed with no whining about costs.
