Weber. One of their lower models. Spirit maybe? Love it.

For charcoal, a Weber 22" (maybe) so old the lid won't even hang on the side cause the catch is broken. Propane is a cast aluminum Ducane circa 1997 with a bunch or rehabbed parts.

Weber 22" master touch, or something like that. I like it.
I've only heard good things about traeger. I'm sure wbh has an opinion.

Kamado Joe Classic. I got it a week before MSU won the Rose Bowl and it has held up fantastic. You can smoke a brisket for 18 hours, sear a steak, or make a pizza on it.

I have a lot of them. The one I use the most is a natural gas Weber Genesis but it's because I grill a lot of chicken to compensate for the pizza. It really depends on what you want to use it for..

Gas grill. If a few hundred bucks isn't going to make a difference, get a Weber.

I was joking. We grill a lot. Steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, vegetables are the staples. Want to do ribs, etc.

Ah I see. You don't NEED a gas grill if you have a kamado but it's incredibly convenient at times. My #1 in your case would be kamado and if possible supplement with a small gas grill.

Re: What kind of grill ya got?
Never tried a pellet pooper. Â Guy I use to work with was from Texas and claimed he'd cooked on every type of grill/smoker. Â Settled on Traeger as his favorite. Â Had one at home and another at his cottage. Â
Grew up with Weber kettles. Â Have a mid-80's OTS, a WSM, a Performer (later bought a rotisserie kit), and a Jumbo Joe. Â Except in a pinch, lump charcoal only.
Not a fan of propane after buying a Weber Genesis about 25 years ago but did like the rotisserie feature...why I got the kit for the Performer.

Basic Chargrill 4-burner. I'll buy whatever the cheapest 4-burner is at Home Depot when the old one is trashed. Guessing this one is ~7 years old. I replaced the diffusers and grates 2 years ago, gave 'er a wipe done this spring and we are good to go.

Re: What kind of grill ya got?
Good timing for this thread. I haven't used my gas grill in 5+ years because I like cooking with charcoal (the taste and the process). So I've been using charcoal in my old gas grill (don't worry, no gas is hooked up or left over in it). That's fine for hot and fast cooking, but doesnt maintain heat well enough to cook low and slow.
It's a temp fix anyway, so looking at getting a new charcoal grill. Not going to spend as much as a kamado, but debating between a kettle and a barrel.
I know everyone likes the Webber kettle grills, but I like the idea of the barrel grills with a small smoker barrel attached...at least in theory. Thoughts on those? I know I can slow cook on indirect heat on a kettle grill, but that cuts back on grill space. Also an important aspect is maintaining heat for slow cooking, if a kettle or barrel is better for that?

Re: What kind of grill ya got?
Miami I think you should really consider spending a bit more and getting a kamado. Even the Costco ones are great products. It does exactly what you want and I suspect you would fall in love with it. Just a thought.
What you are talking about is basically an offset smoker. The firebox is the offset portion, hence the name. You can indeed put charcoal in the main chamber or barrel if you want to cook directly. Unless you are willing to invest, it will not hold heat very well. Just my .02.

Re: What kind of grill ya got?
I'll look at the Costco kamados and research them a bit more, but I don't know if I'd do all that much slow cooking/smoking that the great heat retention would be necessary. It's just something that my current temporary set up doesnt really do. But if I had something that did slow cooking really well like a kamado, maybe I would do it frequently enough to be worth it. Will have to give that some thought.

Was at an Ace Hardware picking up a new chimney charcoal starter over the weekend and saw Weber is now selling Weber pellet style grills @ $1200 & $1000

They've been out for a couple years. Notice that they are "2nd Gen". There were functional issues (forget what they were) with the first gen so they had to quickly go back to the drawing board.GRR Spartan wrote:Was at an Ace Hardware picking up a new chimney charcoal starter over the weekend and saw Weber is now selling Weber pellet style grills @ $1200 & $1000

To go back on my previous post... I have this:
https://www.amazon.com/Weber-741001-Original-22-Inch-Charcoal/dp/B00004RALU
plus this
https://snsgrills.com/collections/slow-n-sear/products/slow-n-sear-deluxe
I basically use the slownsear for everything. I've found it keeps temp ~5ish hours before I run out of charcoal...but also been running hotter than 225. Made some good brisket/burnt ends and pulled pork with it. Steaks I've done 3 before...although suppose you could sear more since you have to let them sit after cooking anyways shouldn't be too big of a deal to sear a few/pull/sear others
Yeah you can do that just pilling charcoal or using a cheap tin...but this isn't that expensive and so much easier than the tin

we used to have one - got rid of it. Didn't really use it very often, plus I've perfected the art (and science) of searing a NY strip in the oven on a cast iron skillet. Beats anything I ever cooked on the grill.

Family Farm and Home has a Z Grill on sale for $250. I might have to go check it out. Looks similar to the Traeger but at 1/4 of the cost I'm going to assume they cut some corners somewhere.

Yeah, the costs with the Traeger are mostly in the digital control, mechanical system for pellets, the fan system for convection, and the wifi temp of the probe AND control of the unit. It's pretty heavy duty so there might be some difference in the metal gauge that they use as well. I'm sure they both cook meat that tastes equally good, I'm just a little spoiled...

I think you'll be pretty stoked, looks like you are getting the upgrade of my traeger pro 575. All and all its the best for great control in smoking. I like to add a bit more smoke so I have one of these
Pellet Smoker Tube
I still use my weber for burgers, steaks and brats since I think it gets a better char to it but the Traeger is extremely multifunctional. Big highlight for me was using it to cook pizza on....*Chefs kiss*
