Left my wallet in the dash of a golf cart at South Seas Plantation Resort on Captiva Island ~20 years ago. No one turned it in. About $350 cash and credit cards, drivers license, insurance cards, etc. Was the Labor Day weekend after 9/11. Wyff and I had the same credit cards, so calling to cancel my cards also cancelled hers. She had enough cash to get us by the day before the return flight to DTW. Problem was I needed ID to get on the plane. SIL was watching our kids that weekend. Managed to direct her to where I thought my birth certificate was in the house. She faxed it to the resort. No picture, of course, but it was enough to allow boarding along with my sob story. Forget the airline but they were pretty understanding.

Sort of a PITA getting all the cards and DL replaced but it worked out. 350 dollar lesson to keep my wallet in my pocket.

Me too. I didn't help Mickey and Minnie in their time of need in Oct 87 when the Mouse House stock was around $5 per share.

Other major mistake was in the late 70's when the gentleman who owned a group of cottages on South Dune Rd on the south side of Little Glen Lake where our family had vacationed for 20 years.  He was retiring and called me to let me know he selling each rental cottage for $25K with 60' of beach frontage and I was one of the 6 he called.  The earlier you agreed you got your choice  but I was married, at MSU one semester from graduation and didn't see the potential.  They white block buildings, not year round places.  The folks that bought them eventually did teardowns and built 1800 to 3600 sq ft homes that are selling for $1M +.  Damned land would have been a helluva nest egg.
