He can be expelled, but I seriously doubt connies would do that. He can also be stripped of committee assignments, but again, if McCarthy becomes Speaker, it’s unlikely he has the spine to do that. More likely, Santos will be pressured to resign by forces inside and out of Congress.

Santos (R) would have to resign and NY governor Hochul (D) would then call a special election.

Given the GOP’s slim majority, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the GOP hunker down, take abuse about Santos and ride it out until 2024 when Santos would lose in the primary.

It took McCarthy days to be elected Speaker by a slim majority. Now he owns Santos and I suspect will do what’s necessary to keep Santos in office so he can depend on his vote for the term.

As this Congress starts making plans for 2024/ Santos will probably not get too much support compared to other McCarthy supporters who represent much safer districts.
