Ford announces return to Formula One for 2026, prepares to partner with Red Bull

I don't think the Ecosports will do well in F1, Nigel.

Lost interest in F1 when they bailed on the downtown Detroit course. Was really cool to watch but the pussy F1'ers complained about bumpiness of the street course.

It was cool having F1 downtown, but the course was terrible for the drivers and cars. It wasn't uncommon for only half the cars to even finish the race.

They were going to move it to Belle Isle in 1989, but couldn't work it out.

Would be awesome if they could find a spot in Michigan for a race. Maybe they will in the future with Ford being involved.

F1 weekend downtown was awesome. You can't create that atmosphere anywhere else in Michigan.

Will Ford pay to smooth out the bumps?

F1 requires permanent garages also. Something Detroit never had. The atmosphere was cool. The race itself was never great. Not enough room for overtaking. F1 coming back to Michigan would have to be on Belle Isle, the Ford test track (if there's enough room there), or maybe MIS if they could build a decent road track. An up north road course would be cool, but would have to be built from scratch. It's kinda quiet on MSU's campus in the summer...

It’s ok to accept that maybe some places aren’t great for some things. Michigan isn’t entitled or have some sort of divine right to host a car race. But the idea of thinking you do is totally F1 personified. At best Detroit Grand Prix was the Buick Open or whatever the stop is in Detroit for the PGA tour. Cool for us but not really as cool for the circuit. And save me the pre canned sound bites by the PR wing of F1 back in the day.

Apparently, IndyCar is returning to a downtown Detroit circuit this year.  

That's really cool.  The old F1 circuit had a couple more turns...long straight down Jefferson takes those out.  Trans Am will be here too, just like they were with F1.

Let IndyCar test it out for a few years for F1. And an Andretti/Cadillac team added to the mix could improve the chances for a Detroit race.

Anybody downtown?

I don't understand much of what they're talking about on TV because I don't ever watch racing, but it's pretty cool to see them racing on the streets of Detroit for the first time in 30 years. I did go a couple of times in the mid 80s and it was LOUD.

FIX THE DAMN ROADS GRETCHEN!

I watched some show that other day about Formula I back in the 40's and 50's - I was struck at how dangerous it was - also in those days there were like 5-10 guys on the whole team including mechanics, pit crew and driver. Now there is over 1500 on each team.
