Russell Dye, a spokesperson for House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), told Axios in a statement Weiss “can’t be trusted” and that his appointment is “just a new way to whitewash the Biden family's corruption."

"Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal,” Dye said. “We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss's inconsistent statements to Congress."

Of course the MAGA Republicans like gym Jordan say they are proceeding with contempt of Congress, and he says when Congress calls, you're supposed to answer.  Funny, because he himself recently defies a subpoena too.  Wish he was prosecuted for that

This brings up an interesting point, Hunter offered to answer all their questions publicly, but Republicans are demanding this private testimony.  Clearly for political games.  Would a judge have the discretion to stop the contempt since Hunter indeed offered to testify?  If not, that should really be made possible by law because these things are used constantly for political reasons.  Public testimony could help control for that a little bit.
The person being subpoenad should have the right to publicly testify in most cases.  Maybe some exclusions for national security or other issues where secrecy is paramount.  Public testimony should most often be the default though and I'm sure a pan of judges can determine if exclusions apply.  These are, after all, our public servants playing these games and asking the questions
