Saw a turtle hit by a car today...
Fucking sucked. The thing didn't stand a chance. 5 lane road, 45 mph. I came across it while I was in the right most lane and swerved. There was nowhere to pull over so I whipped a U'y and sped back but it was gone. Made it all of two lanes. Only turtle I've seen (on the road) in this area (DC suburbs) after living here 3 years.
Racoons, cats, dogs, squirrels, rabbits, etc. all suck to hit or see hit. But turtles are the worst for me. They take years before they are able to breed. This guy was probably 10 or so. How hard is it to miss a turtle too?
The one thing that makes me feel better is that someone in white color work attire had seen the turtle crossing and parked at the nearest lot (where I did my u-turn) and was running back down the sidewalk at full speed in 85F heat. Nice to know there are other people that give a damn.

My almost five year old really likes turtles, too. But more of the ninja variety. And he doesn't really like to talk to television reporters about it.

I see dead turtles, snakes and squirrels in the state park by my house every once in a while. I'm thinking wtf, the speed limit is 25 mph and people are lousy enough drivers that they can't stop or slow down enough to miss them?

It's actually pretty hard to hit squirrels. You basically have to aim a little bit right or left of it (choose your own direction) b/c he's going to dart one way or the other. If you aim right at it, you hardly ever nail it.

They tend to jump while under the car if you straddle them. I've seen a couple waxed that wayBrock Middlebrook wrote:

I've seen turtles get hit twice. It's never nice to see an animal get hit, but the crunch of a turtle shell is kind of horrifying. One was in my subdivision, too, but the douches there like to speed so it's not much of a surprise.

Yup. Very much like the sound of a human skull getting crushed. Or so I've been told.

Re: Saw a turtle hit by a car today...
I actually do like turtles. My daughter has been raising one for several years (from the size of a thumbnail). It pretty tame, but a voracious hunter (frogs, crickets, etc.). We keep it out in a large water trough in the Spring/Summer, and it will come when called.
The fam went to an animal exhibit and some dude has a 25 year old snapping turtle that slept on a dog bed and would climb up you leg for attention. I'm sorry I missed it.
Pic of me fishing on the PM when this bad oscar swam by.
(I'm actually a poor black child, the sun was especially bright this day, and I was shit-faced)
