Lewan was later flagged for grabbing the facemask of Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan. He said he did it to keep quarterback Zach Mettenberger safe.

"I just got beat on that play,'' Lewan said. "It was bad technique by me. And I'd rather get a penalty on myself than get a quarterback hurt."

But the game that drew the most attention happened just last year, when Lewan was seen during a nationally televised game grabbing the facemasks of multiple Michigan State defenders — including one who was on the ground — at various points during the Wolverines' one-sided loss to the Spartans.

He was flagged for a couple of personal fouls in the game, and one commentator said he was surprised Lewan hadn't been ejected.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Lewan and his Michigan teammates, as the Spartans sacked Wolverines quarterback Devin Gardner seven times — none were Lewan's fault — and held Michigan to minus-48 yards rushing.

"I think there have been times where it might seem like I was (crossing the line) for no reason when really … Devin Gardner was sacked 37 times this past season and 35 of them came from our interior offensive line," Lewan said. "When we played Michigan State, he was sacked seven times. When you see your quarterback taking hits like that, even if it is not you giving up those sacks, you take it personally."

So when the opposing defense is playing well, he takes it "personally". There's his problem. There's a difference between taking things professionally vs emotionally. If you're getting beat, you shouldn't take it personally. You should be frustrated and try to step up your game - not act like child.

Every time Lewan played a good defense the guy resorted to has bag of dirty tricks.

Against Gholston he went for the face mask, against Alabama he got flagged twice for the face mask, against Clowney he clutched onto dread locks and the face mask, against us last year there was a montage of his dirty play that ABC rolled.

The guy was dominant against lowly Minnesota, Indiana, and the other crappy teams in the B10. When he went against pro talent he was always exposed.

I chuckle when the BTN runs their "hype" commercial for the upcoming football season. They have a clip of Lewan grabbing a PSU player's facemask and pushing/bending his head to the side. It's a filthy play and they're airing it for everyone to see.
