Six months after the Olympics, and Sochi looks like Detroit
Well, not exactly. It's a lot cleaner. But still mostly abandoned.

Commenting on the internet is becoming an art form. There are some zingers in that one.
You're right, I'm 100% certain this won't fall into complete disrepair. I can tell just by looking at the pile of abandoned toilets.

Serious question...will it still look that deserted in the winter? Wouldn't any winter resort look abandoned in August?

Tourism from the Ukraine has really fallen off.

Apparently Summer is high season in Sochi. The ski area is about 20 miles away.

It depends on what you want out of the Games. States like Russia and China were not looking for a financial return on their investment. Putin and CCP wanted to build legitimacy at home and prestige abroad. You will probably see more-and-more authoritarian and developing states make bids for both the Olympics and World Cup. At the same time, when you see developed states bid, you have to ask yourself who is driving the bid. Probably local officials from the public and private sectors trying to market their city to the world.

Didn't all but 2 cities pull out for the 2022 winter olympics, or something like that?

Bids from Krakow (Poland), Stockholm (Sweden), and Lviv (Ukraine) were pulled out. The Krakow bid as a result of poor performance in a referendum. Candidates cities for 2022 are located in China, Kazakhstan, and Norway. However, Oslo (Norway) seems to be struggling to gain support.

Yeah, I've visited ski resorts in Colorado and Northern Michigan in mid summer that didn't look much busier.

And I've golfed at many Michigan ski resorts in the summer that have had full tee sheets. Gonna guess that no one is teeing it up at Sochi Hills or Sochi G&CC right now.

Fortunately, they'll still get plenty of visitors from the Kazakhstan and the Uzbekistan looking for work. But with the sanctions, no one from the Britain or the France is going to visit the Russia anytime soon.
