They're ok. I'm a big Power Metal fan, so I've got a couple of their earlier albums. They definitely play at a high tempo. But I never got into the UK Power Metal (DragonForce, Power Quest) as much as I did with so many bands from Germany, Finland and elsewhere around Europe (giants like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, as well as other great power metal bands like Sonata Arctica's early stuff, Edguy's early stuff, Primal Fear, etc.). DragonForce is still always a fun listen, though.

Just getting into the scene myself. Avenged sevenfold got my interest in it. I've listened to hammerfall in the past and still really like them.

Listened to Helloween way back in the day. Always liked their sound.

The closest match to Dragonforce these days is actually a band that a friend of mine put together. They're from Long Island, only released one EP, but working on a full length now.

As for power metal in general, buckle up.
Jens Carlsson is one of the most exciting vocalists I've ever heard.

Were you in Georgia this past weekend? Stratovarius headlined progpower, Orden Ogan and Masterplan were there too.

Trade speed for quality any day. These guys aren't quite as fast but the difference is marked.

I tried listening to Colors, sounded like an extreme metal ripoff of Dream Theaters Metropolis Pt. II

No, I've never gone up to Progpower.  They usually have great lineups, but metal shows aren't something I would spend money traveling to at this point in my life (family and work priorities).  It's tempting to go up to Tampa in a couple of weeks for Sonata Arctica with Seven Kingdoms opening.  Sonata actually returned somewhat to power metal on their last album, but I really like Seven Kingdoms.  Admittedly, I probably like them more because they're from Florida, but play a very European power/thrash.  I'm not usually big on female vocalists, but her tone is kind of cool, and not just another Tarja wannabe.  So I'll give a shout out to them:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpa6f6s23PE

How is that bad? BTBAM gets better with time, one of the few bands that constantly get better in my opinion

Trust me I'm familiar with Seven Kingdoms. Camden Cruz actually organizes a pretty cool metal festival in DeLand Florida, a few friends will be playing there (Judicator, Skyliner, Shadowstrike). Wish I could go down to that.

Speaking of Skyliner, they're local to Florida as well.

As for Sonata, I'm not sure I'd call that a return to power metal. I don't think anyone in that band really knows how to make it anymore. However their old guitarist has a really cool project with the singer of Stratovarius that's releasing a new album probably next year.

Also, Sonata Arctica re-recorded their debut, just released "kingdom for a heart." Tony seriously does not know how to make power metal anymore.

I like my prog original. I posted a bunch of links in a thread over on tRCMB for my prog tastes.

I figured you'd be plenty familiar with Seven Kingdoms. You seriously know your shit. I always see them promoting the Deland Metal festival on their Facebook page. Looks awesome, and it's nice to see. I'll check out some of the bands you've mentioned. You've given good recommendations in the past.

I did say that Sonata Arctica returned SOMEWHAT to power metal. And by that I mean, relative to their last couple shit shows. I know what you're saying, but there seemed to be something different, perhaps a little bit of movement back toward some power metal elements than we'd seen in years. I think I want to hold out some hope that they will see the light.

Curious, what are your thoughts about Dreamtale? They've had major inconsistency in lineups over the years, especially vocals, but actually have 2 (maybe 3?) straight albums with the same guy. It seems people are often widely split on them, but I'm in the camp of those that really like their stuff. Kind of a Finnish-German hybrid sound that clicks with me.

Dreamtale is cool stuff. Not sure why I haven't spent more time in their discog, but I'm trying to focus on newer bands these days. For Finnish-German middle ground, I'm really partial to Merging Flare. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBJ4OHBQa0w
