Re: Northwestern looking pretty good against Wisconsin
Every time we go there it's like a trip to the ****ing dentist, and it's usually around 42 degrees and drizzle. Every time. And we haven't won there since 1999.
If Ludwig has a job next year, I'm going to lose my mind.
But, we did have fun on our bus ride up there...finished up our boozing under a tree to be out of the rain.

From Grantland Today
Demerits
… and the worst.
• UCLA’s offensive line: UCLA desperately needs quarterback Brett Hundley to remain upright, but has yet to keep him clean for a full game. On Saturday, the Bruins allowed 10 sacks in the loss to Utah, including sacks on three consecutive plays in the fourth quarter. That brings their total to 22 sacks allowed for the season, seven more than any other Pac-12 offense.
• Wisconsin’s quarterbacks: Melvin Gordon is the best big-play back in the nation, and the stat sheet reflects it after he ripped off 259 yards rushing on 9.6 per carry Saturday at Northwestern. In the same game, though, Wisconsin QBs Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy combined to complete just 12 of 29 passes with four interceptions, at least temporarily knocking the Badgers from the driver’s seat in the Big Ten’s West Division with a 20-14 loss. Stave, you may recall, was shelved for the first month of the season because of a debilitating case of the “yips,” an elusive but very real mental block that kept him from throwing the ball with his usual accuracy in practice. Last week, Stave assured reporters that he had been cured, but his numbers against the Wildcats — 8-of-19 passing, 114 yards, three interceptions off the bench — did not reflect it. Unfortunately, McEvoy’s numbers against sentient competition have somehow been even worse.

The sad part is, we still could. QB play has been absolutely abysmal...like barely D3 level (to say it's MAC level would be an insult to the MAC). The play calling has been horrendous and not played to the strengths of the guys on the field. Absolutely no one has stepped up among the WRs. I actually hope that the Tanner McEvoy experiment is finally over and they can quickly convert him to WR.
Injuries on defense have made that a questionable unit that was thin to start with, defensive backfield play has been terrible. It's basically a little bit of O line play and Melvin Gordon. And I don't think they've even been using him as well as they could have.
We'll see if they can turn it around, and in the West they probably can. But Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota would all likely beat us right now.
But whatever...we're a basketball school anyway

Could Beilema not recruit QB's? Where does that problem come from? You'd think there would be a QB somewhere that would be serviceable and good enough to play behind a wall of mass that is usually one of the best olines in the country, year in and year out.

Yeah you kind of expect UW to crank out qbs like Sorgi, Bollinger, etc. the same way they do with big men in hoops with Leur, Kaminsky etc..

He could not (though he did recruit wilson, but that was a one year solution). Presumably because of the style of offense, or the perception of the style of offense. We showed the year wilson was there that we could be successful with the pass, but haven't had anyone to throw it to this year. We've got a good dual threat QB coming in next year who SHOULD be a huge upgrade at the position and who can compete with Gillins (another good dual threat QB), but we'll see. Bart Houston was an elite 11 QB and he can't get on the field. Some bad luck with other injuries and a lot of recruiting misses.

Re: Northwestern looking pretty good against Wisconsin
I am loving this. Fuck Wisconsin.
Northwestern winning the West would be pretty sweet. I like the way that program operates, and it'd be a pretty cool surprise. If they can make it through October undefeated in conference play, there might be a legit shot at it given how soft the end of their conference slate is.
