Article MSU moves toward tobacco-free campus

As part of an ongoing effort to ensure the MSU community enjoys a healthy campus, a task force has been created to guide the process of transitioning Michigan State University to a tobacco-free environment.

Led by the Office of the University Physician, the task force will guide campus and community leadership in the development, adoption, implementation, enforcement and evaluation of a tobacco-free policy at MSU.

“The rationale for this move rests largely on a fundamental concern for the health of the entire campus community,” Provost June Pierce Youatt said. “Decades of research confirm the negative effects of smoking, smokeless tobacco and second-hand tobacco smoke. Moving toward a tobacco-free policy aligns with our efforts to create the healthiest academic and workplace environment possible at MSU.”

Smokers being treated as second class citizens. They aren't doing anything illegal. A smoke free campus is someone pushing an agenda. Having smoking area's outside is easily avoidable and allows a smoker the chance to get one in. Still, I guess it is going to be another way to get revenue from the students, just an additional tax, because I very much doubt I'd leave campus to smoke, when I smoked.

I don't get the concern of smoking, if someone is smoking outside. As long as I'm not in a confined space, I can deal with it. If someone wants to smoke, let them fucking smoke. It's not for me, and never has been. It just doesn't make sense to call a huge outside area smoke free, when it will dissipate quickly in the air.

I think this is kind of lame. I don't care if someone smokes or not as long as it's outside, so people smoking on campus doesn't bother me.

Seems like people are being a bit too over-the-top with this tobacco-free campus thing.

It's all about caring for your fellow man or control. I'm leaning toward control justified by caring about your fellow man. If someone uses the phrase "it's for the kids" I'll know that's the case.

Michigan has the same policy, smokers don't seem to give a shit. There's no one to enforce it so people don't care.

I remember a very unpleasant moment in my life that occurred when someone was smoking outdoors. Was walking down Park Ave and this dude about 15 feet in front of me was smoking and when he exhaled the smoke flew back and went right into my mouth and directly into my lungs. Blech!

Agreed, but if they flick a butt on the ground, they should be shot on site.

I'm a light smoker, and actually appreciate some of the indoor bans. However, the outside ones are just getting ridiculous.

It's all an effort to stop the general public from smoking before we go to a single payer healthcare system. I've been traveling a lot lately, and the efforts are much stronger in other countries(and some you wouldn't expect, like South America).

there are signs all around campus.. which, though aesthetically displeasing, are still more appealing than people standing around smoking.

So you're opposed to freedom to smoke.

I'm pro-life which means I'm opposed to people killing other people.

However, if someone wants to kill themselves, they have the freedom to do so - unfortunate, certainly, but their right.

So you're opposed to freedom to smoke.

This is some special kind of logic.

I can't speak for OTPT but I think only the rights of women, Mexicans, black people, the First Amendment and Muslims should be curtailed.

Otherwise, I love freedom.
