Can you run a sub 5 minute "beer mile"?
This guy is a champ. Running a mile while drinking four beers in under 5 minutes. I don't think any of you people could run a sub 5 minute mile anyways.

Sub 5? hell no.
I could do it in 6.5, but I'd be done doing anything else for the rest of the day.
Edit: Not a chance, this was extremely impressive

I question that third beer being empty...
I'd argue this is more impressive than a 4 minute mile. You lose 30 seconds drinking/slowing down if not more and starting/stopping always makes a fast run worse for me. This doesn't account for the 48 oz of beer also in his system.

Has anyone here actually tried a beer miler? I have. It's not an easy task.
Anything sub 10 minutes is damn impressive, regardless of how fast you normally run.

As someone who has never tried it, are there any specific rules that one must follow for it to be considered a true "beer mile?" Can I drink all 4 beers before running? After? What if I'm running on an indoor track and a mile is 8-10 laps, does that mean I have to drink 8-10 beers?

Yes, there are specific rules.
www.beermile.com
Official Beermile.Com Rules
1. Each competitor drinks four cans of beer and runs four laps on a track
(Start - beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap - finish).
2. Beer must be consumed before the lap is begun, within the
transition area which is the 10 meter zone before the start/finish
line on a 400m track.
3. The race begins with the drinking of the first beer in the last meter
of the transition zone to ensure the competitors run a complete mile
(1609 meters).
4. Women also drink four beers in four laps (past rule lists only required
ladies to drink three beers).
5. Competitors must drink canned beer and the cans should not be
less than 355ml (the standard can volume) or 12oz (the imperial equivalent).
Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are at least
12 oz (355 ml) in volume.
6. No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage
by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate. ie "super mega
mouth cans" or "wide mouth bottles" are prohibited.
7. Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner, ie. no
shotgunning or puncturing of the can except for opening the can by
the tab at the top. The same applies with bottles - no straws or
other aids are allowed in order to aid in the speed of pouring.
8. Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume. Hard ciders and lemonades
will not suffice. The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage
brewed from malt and flavored with hops. For an abbreviated list of valid
beers and exceptions, click here.
9. Each beer can must not be opened until the competitor enters the
transition zone on each lap.
10. Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete
one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the
completion of their 4th lap). Note: Vomitting more than once
during the race still requires only one penalty lap at the end.
* It is strongly recommended, when attempting official records, to tip the empty beer
can or bottle over your head at the end of a chug to verify an empty vessel.

Thanks! I just heard about this earlier today before an exam and didn't have time to actually look it up. I wonder if something like this would be a wonderful charity event.

That is insane. I can do the 5 minute mile part, but there's no way I'd make it past lap 2 without puking.

I think the more impressive part is chugging 4 beers in less than 5 minutes.

So no time limit, just as fast as you can? If so, I think the 9/9/9 baseball challenge is harder.

Yea, because I want to spend north of $100 on food and concessions. I've done it multiple times at home and it's easy, just have no desire to do it at the park.

No way. More people can finish 4 cans of beer in 5 minutes than can run a 5 minute mile.

It's a race.
The goal is to compete, not to complete.
Sitting on your ass for 3 hours watching baseball and shoveling beer/food into your mouth (9 hotdogs, 9 beers, 9 innings) is not comparable.

You've eaten 9 hot dogs in 2 1/2 - 3 hours multiple times? That's pretty gross.

That's why I asked. In that case, yes, it's obviously much harder.

The vast majority of beermilers don't involve anyone running a 5 minute mile. The winner of the one I competed in did it in around 9 minutes. My time was somewhere around 12 minutes. I can run a 5 minute mile under ideal conditions.

What slows you down the most? The time it takes to stop in the designated area and drink the beers or how much harder it is to run after having chugged said beer?

Time spent chugging beer, particularly on laps 3-4. The fast guys can down a can in less than 20 seconds despite their heart rate being maxed. I had to stop and breathe, try not to puke, etc. I probably spent 2 minutes getting the last beer down.

Sorry for all the Qs but this is really interesting to me. Is there a large variety of beer used by people? I'm assuming everyone tries to stick as close to 5% ABV beers as possible, especially since it's cans. I once witnessed someone try to "gain a mental advantage" in a gallon challenge by opting for chocolate milk. It did not end well.

The ideal beer would be light/low cal and low carbonation and as flavorless as possible.
The ABV isn't as important as the "heaviness" of a beer. A Budweiser is 5% while a Guinness is 4.2%. I know which one I'd rather chug in this context.
Everyone drank Budweiser at the one I did. The beer was provided by our running club so as to eliminate any advantage/disadvantage on beer type. I think most light beers are actually less than 5% ABV, but unless you're trying for an "official" record, I'm not sure it really matters.
