A relief pitcher is awarded a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
He is not the winning pitcher; and
He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
He enters the game, regardless of the score, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck; or
He pitches for at least three innings. (The word "effectively" has been removed from the MLB rules.)
Under the last condition, the official scorer has some discretion as to whether or not to award a save. This is rule 10.20 of the Major League Rules.
No more than one save may be credited in each game.
In this case there were 2 runners on base, the T. Hunter was at bat and the tying run was on deck. If you go to baseballreference.com you'll see the save in Nathan's stats.

7-1 twins finally score. Firing gardenhire was so stupid unless it was a favor from upper management sparing him from this years shit show.

Shane Greene looked good (although it's only one start). All things considered, I feel like he's as good a fit for this team as Porcello, but without the ridiculous salary for the kind of pitcher he is.

Greene had a good 1st half last year then faded, hopefully this year he's got better endurance. Simon is the one that worries me.

That Twins team is pathetic. They might challenge for the 43-119 the Tigers dropped a few years back.

Re: tOfficial 2015 Detroit Tigers thread
In the first three games of the season, the Tigers swept their series against the Twins by a combined score of 22–1, putting Detroit's average margin of victory at seven runs per game and giving them a +21 run differential after just three games.
Why is that significant? Since 1900, only 15 other teams have boasted a run differential of +20 or better after the first three games of the season. That’s 15 teams out of 2,422 team seasons, or 0.6%. And what happened to those teams? Fourteen of them finished the season with winning records, and nine of them went to the postseason. Of the six that didn’t, three won 88 games or more (and would have made the playoffs under the current two wild-card structure). Only the 1951 White Sox and 1970 Angels were mediocre, and only the 2001 Rockies had a losing record. Those Rockies, of course, played those first three games at home, where they did have a winning record that season. Together, those 15 teams compiled a .585 winning percentage, which translates to a 95-win season.

Up 2-0. This is probably my favorite tigers team in a long time. The offense is a thing of beauty with all of the speed.

Hardy threw 2 nice innings the other day, Krol and Soria seem to be reliable. Other than that anything can happen.

They were just saying KCs BP hasn't given up a run this year. The central is going to be very exciting this year.

Well, that's what happens when you can't make a routine throw to second. You get bit by the 2-run double when you should be batting.

This team rules. The BP is improved but still dodgy in a few spots. Nothing a superior offense can't fix.

This team is an offensive juggernaut......very few holes in the lineup. That should make up for not being quite as strong with Starting pitching. The bullpen remains a dumpster fire.

I cannot believe how bad the bullpen is, given how many draft picks the Tigers have spent on that. Really hoping someone like Hardy steps up, and that Rondon gets healthy.
The offense this year is so much more balanced, though. It's awesome. Starting pitching isn't bad, but we were spoiled the last few years having Scherzer, Sanchez, Porcello, and good Verlander.

The good news is Clevelands bp looks like a dumpster fire.
Gorzelanny looked pretty damn good, I was happy with his performance.
Krol looked lost out there. Cleveland did a good job today, they worked up Price's pitch count and got him out of there. Price made a crucial error that gave up 6 runs. Cleveland wouldn't have even been in this game if it wasn't for the dumb ass throw to second.
Agree loosegoose, our offense is a work of art. Reminds me of the A's lineup last year with Crisp and Cespedes. They had so much speed and were so efficient.

I know batting average is an old school stat....but DET right now has a TEAM BA of .364 and a team OPS of .971, crazy numbers.

Some interesting tid bits from around the league:
Royals are still 5-0 as and their bp has yet to give up a run.
White Sox are 1-4
Yankees are 1-4
Braves are undefeated
Prince Fielder is batting .364 and he just had another belly flop in a game.

Indians finally got smart and intentionally walked Miguel after he went 4 for 4 with 2 HR's, a double, 4 RBI's, and 3 runs scored. Just another day at the park.

Pretty strong coming from Gage.
Gage: Hands down, the Tigers' best six-game start ever
CLEVELAND -- Never mind that the Tigers have been 6-0 three other times in franchise history. . .
I'm telling you that this is their best six-game start ever.
Because it is.
Better even than in 1984 when they didn't lose until their 10th game.
What I won't tell you, and can't tell you, is that a six-game start is hugely important. It can be. Or it can't be.
For the Tigers, it's been both.

Going to try to watch a Royals game to get a look at them. They play the Twins and we have the Pirates. I'm going to guess that our first loss happens against Pittsburgh and the Royals should sweep the Twins in their three game series.
