Cliff Alexander Trouble
interesting....dodged a bullet here?
Freshman big man Cliff Alexander was delcared out for Saturday's game vs. Texas because of an NCAA eligibility issue, Kansas announced.
There was no immediate word if Alexander would miss games beyond Saturday.
"The NCAA has alerted us to an issue that could affect Cliff's eligibility," Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. "As a precautionary measure Cliff will not take the court until we have resolved the issue."
Coach Bill Self said, "We are committed to NCAA rules compliance and we want to make sure that we take every precaution to minimize the impact on Cliff."
The school is planning no further comment until it is "resolved."

Re: Cliff Alexander Trouble
I could be wrong, but I recall MSU's recruitment of Alexander coming to an abrupt end. Maybe we will soon know why.
Edit: this is what I was thinking of. Izzo said Chicago hoops comes with a lot of middlemen, and Alexander said he no longer had any kind of relationship with MSU.

Maybe Cliff is sick of riding the pine a lot and is already calling agents.

Re: Cliff Alexander Trouble
So let me get this straight, it takes years to get a rapist off the field at UofM and nothing is done at FSU but some poor family that takes a loan from a bank is getting shamed by the NCAA?
What a facking joke!

This exactly the kind of thing that I think is a good solution. Let the players get a legitimate loan.

Who decides who is loan worthy and who isn't? See the slippery slope there?

It is just like any loan - the free market decides. They aren't going to lend money to anyone they think won't pay them back or they will go out of business.
As it is now, the lenders are shady individuals breaking rules and taking advantage of kids.

Seriously? You don't think schools like Kansas and Kentucky would "arrange" it so that every one of their players got a "loan" regardless of pro potential? And those loans would be forgiven if the player didn't make the pros? And these "loans" would be included in the recruiting pitch?
Do you also believe in unicorns?

Re: Cliff Alexander Trouble
Hmmmm. Maybe I didn't think that through very well. But college players can get insurance policies now based on pro potential right?

So what if they do? Plenty of schools already have huge advantages in college sports. It's not a sport that welcomes parity.

Judging by the unraveling of the Penn State sanctions, assault is not really within the jurisdiction of the NCAA.

So where does a player place his loyalty, with his team or the institution or agency that gave him (or his family) a loan? In other words, is the institution or agency pulling strings in the background? It sounds silly, but in the case of Alexander, it does not sound like a traditional banking institution was involved. If Alexander has a sore knee, sits for 3 games, and then KU's team doctor says he is cleared to play, does the agency that gave the loan intervene in the background to protect their investment? Do they tell Alexander that he needs to be seen by a doctor they approve of, or that he needs to tell KU he is sitting for two more games to be fully certain he is healed? The point is, once you introduce big money from the outside, you divide the player's loyalty.

True, but parity is much easier to achieve in CBB than CFB. Although I do not understand your comment. Are you saying that since their is already a sizable current gap, we might as well turn it into the Grand Canyon?

Well there's limited roster space on every team, and plenty of talent out there. A team like Kentucky can't have every pg in the country, and a school like UofM isn't going to pay for every QB in the country. I actually think there'd be some changes here and there but I think overall the landscape would remain pretty close to what it is right now.

Don't know what to think of these 'loans'. Lots of cons, maybe a few pros.
More than anything, I'm glad this isn't MSU's problem. Glad he went to kansas.
