Letting your kid play football
Just curious. Would you let your kid play football in 2015? Say you have an 8 year old, and he really wants to play. Yay or nay?
Full disclosure, my kid is almost 6 and is not interested at this point in time. But I have no idea what I will/would do if it comes to that point. My inclination right now is to steer him towards Quidditch.

I would, but I have 2 girls so that's not really something I need to worry about.

Maybe while he was little and slamming into other kids wasn't so bad because he was weak and slow. But mostly I think I'd encourage baseball.

Have him take up dance. Not joking. He'll get the hottest girls and they love dancers. Screw football

Re: Letting your kid play football
This is a hypothetical thread, not an asking for advice thread. It took me a few years but I realized that I can't steer my kids to what I want them to do. If it were up to him as of today, in August 2015, he would probably pursue being a wolf or an elephant. Or maybe Jack Skellington.DWags wrote:WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:Just curious. If you had 2 boys, you'd have to worry about 2 football players.
Since you have 2 girls, you have to worry about ALL the football players.

Let him play football if he wants. It's fine. It's not the NFL. He is not going to be colliding with JJ Watt.

I meet a lot of people that never played football that seem to have very limited use of their brain.

Don't be silly. This is 2015 not 1985. Kids don't play sports outside any more.

Something has to give though. I'm glad I didn't have to make that choice. I'm not sure I'd want my kid playing.

Hey, I'm not saying I don't want the game to continue or I wouldn't play it again. I would. Just glad I don't have to make that choice for my kid. If I had a son and not two daughters I'd let him choose and if he chose football I'd do what I could to teach him safety. But if he didn't want to, I wouldn't encourage him.

Re: Letting your kid play football
If he wanted to, I'd let my hypothetical son play.
I played hockey growing up, and that's a pretty violent sport as well. Who am I to tell my kid that he couldn't play the sport he wanted to because it's too violent, when I was running into people full speed on the ice growing up. Kind of a hypocritical thing to do.

one of my kid's basketball and baseball teammates also played soccer. He ended up with as many or more concussions than a lot of the football players.
Only know that because the schools athletic boosters spent big bucks on concussion testing software when both were freshman. Every player on every team took the test every year before their first sport. The soccer player was an outlier. Football and hockey were 1-2 and basketball (both boys and girls) were ahead of wrestling.

I'd like my daughter to be interested in golf. My wife and I also want to start her in some form of martial arts soon. I figure with the golf, she'd be sure to get some type of scholarship for college, minority woman helps fill a lot of checklists.

College golf and tennis scholarships often require the kind of money spent to train that's equal to 2-4 years of college depending on if you are looking to private or public schools. Plus recruiting is national and often international.
My friend's daughter started semi-serious tennis summer between 6th and 7th grade. She played at a local club and played local tournaments. Was a 4 time state champ in 3rd and then 2nd singles. (2nd then 1st singles champ was on the same team). Her folks had to start taking her to FL and AZ after her senior year to get attention from MSU's tennis coach.
Good luck but keep your check book handy. Might be better off to take the money you might spend on tennis and golf coaches and put it in a college fund. Start in 5th grade and you might have a healthy college fund.

I have heard of parents preparing their children to compete for academic scholarships. It's weird but I have heard about it happening.

Re: Letting your kid play football
Youngest son wanted to play football in middle school. Played a couple years. One of the smallest kids on the team. Some of his teammates and opponents probably weighed twice as much.
Thankfully he didn't get in many plays. Remember one where he went to tackle the opposing QB running up the far sideline. Grabbed hold of the guy with one hand as he was passing by and ended up looking a flag waving behind the QB for a second, but he completed the tackle.

Re: Letting your kid play football
Growing up my athletic programs took head injuries very seriously along with proper hydration. If he wants to play why wouldn't you let him? Is there an epidemic about middle school and high school kids not being able to think anymore? I understand the issue in the NFL but if they play growing up and don't continue in college can they really mess up their lives? I saw maybe 5-6 concussions growing up and those kids were out until their family doctor cleared them. Just curious what the main concern is especially when they're younger they're facing brick shit houses and colliding at 100 mph

That's why I only played football for one year when I was a kid. I loved football but I fucking hated running. I even liked the drills. But it was like 10% football, 90% running.

So was I and can point to a number of teammates who were knocked out multiple times who started struggling with life before they were 25.
In coaches defense they were doing what they had been taught and there was no scientific evidence what they were doing was causing harm.
The USMC had all recruits fight with pugil stick without helmets for almost 40 years too until they added pads and helmets after it was costing them recruits to medical reasons.
