Read Jared Diamond 's Guns, German and Steel a couple of years ago. You and I agree it's a great read.
The Hamilton bio is a fascinating read on how Hamilton a child of an unwed mother born in a Caribbean colony came from nothing and ended up being a general in the Revolutionary Army and the first Sec of Treasury.
If you can find it, The Arms of Krupp by William Manchester is a good book about the House of Krupp who pretty much armed Germany from the 1500's through 1968.
