Mich. St. AD 'concerned' if school was to host Michigan at night

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis isn't pushing for his team to host Michigan in a primetime game in 2016.

The two schools have never had an evening kickoff. While a primetime game, perhaps on ABC, would make it one of the most-watched games on Oct. 29, Hollis isn't worried about possible TV numbers. Instead, he told MLive.com he would be 'concerned about hosting the game at night' due to the fan behavior at the Ohio State game in 2014.

The game, won by the Buckeyes, was an 8 p.m. ET kick.

"The number of bottles and the behavior at that (Ohio State) game was about as bad as I've ever seen at Michigan State, and that's not an environment that we condone," Hollis said. "The folks dropping bottles weren't 20 year olds, they were much older.

"You want people to be able to come and be able to enjoy themselves, but you want them to be at something that takes place in a healthy environment. It's not an open invitation to a drunk fest — it's a tailgate, and it's a football game, and it's how can we get the behaviors that would allow us to have more opportunities that people want."

Uh oh, also sounds like more tailgating restrictions coming up this year. Very short sighted IMO. Easy to implement while you have a team that is doing well, very difficult to recall once attendance starts to dip.

The biggest reason I can imagine why Hollis isn't giving an automatic yes to an MSU vs umaa game is the bill for security is more than he wants it to be and he wouldn't be the only one involved in hiring the security.

Ingham County Sheriff and ELPD would see that game as Christmas in October and the overtime requests for their deputies and patrol officers would be staggering.

You may be right. Hollis has to be more frugal after he cost the athletic department millions by negotiating its apparel deal a year before he had to and right before the landscape completely changed in favor of the schools.

It has been my observation that Hollis has an anti-booze....I don't want to call it an "agenda" because I think he knows he needs to tread lightly...but I'll call it a solid anti-booze "stance".

I think there are some other proactive measures that could be taken that may help curb the behaviors that he cites rather than pushing in the other direction.

Meh, I don't care if we play those guys at 8 AM, as long as we win and I can live vicariously through the players accomplishments and keep my Walmart neighbors at bey.

There's 24 hours in the day. Game is 3:1/2 sleep for 7, that leaves 13 1/2 hours to drink and wear my spartan gear and enjoy the fruits of their labors
