Got my first puter at CompUSA (the one south of 14 on JohnR) in '91 for about $2500. 386 with 4mb ram and 120mb hard drive...it was the bee's knees. Came with DOS 5.0 IIRC.

SIL had a travel agency back then and somehow got Microsoft's Detroit account. She arranged for me to pick up a free copy of Windows 3.0 at their Southfield Town Center office. Remember getting off the elevator and being sorta blown away. The entrance to their suite (which took up half the floor) was amazing. All glass from floor to ceiling and maybe 25 feet wide. Huge counter behind the doors with Microsoft in huge letters on the wall behind it.

I have a basic MacBook I've owned for nearly six years. Paid 1000 for it.
Replaced the near death HD and SATA cable last year with a 500GB SSD and new cable for about $200 and upgraded the memory from the 4GB is came with to 8GB.

I was a windows user for over 20 years. Switched to a Mac after MAC MS Office actually became interchangable for work.

But you can get Apple products for a decent price. My kid dragged hers around through grad school and several years after. Replaced the 8 year old machine with a reconditioned Apple with the same warranty for $900 because of the aluminum case and durability.

Its a free market. Apple has hit the wall with iPad and now with iPhone. But their share in PC business has increased.

Hell, if Apple keeps loading up their OS so you have to have a 32GB iPhones I'll be looking at a Nexus phone when my 5s dies and be looking at a Chromebook.

I'm debating on getting a new mobo, i5 processor and 16 gigs of memory for about $5-600.

Just had my tech guy order me a $2700 Dell. He showed me the website and asked what I wanted, and I just picked all the good stuff. The 4k touch screen is a bit annoying at times, but it's crazy light.

I built my own desktop PC for gaming and rock a MacBook Pro for everything else. Best of both worlds IMO. Let me know when you find that $800 Dell with specs that match the MacBook Pro.

Agreed that most people do not need a high performance laptop, regardless of brand. I bought a MBP because I knew I wouldn't need to buy a new laptop for at least 4 years. Every PC laptop I've ever owned died after a year or two, usually due to heating issues, or the power supply would last like an hour on a full charge.

I need a new laptop you guys. Casual work stuff. Maybe surfing the net. Maybe some message boarding. Maybe tons of porn. That kinda thing. Doesn't need to be too fancy. But, I don't know anything about shopping for this stuff.

Here's always been my thinking. Hypothetically, let's say that my Dell would only last 1 year (it's actually 4 years old with no problems, but for the sake of discussion let's say it only lasts 1, since that's what Apple slappies like to tell you).

Do I want to pay $2,000 for something that will last 3-4 years, or do I want to pay $500-$700 each year and get better specs/technology each year? I'd go for the latter, personally. It's so easy to switch over to new devices these days, why would I want to be sitting with old technology years down the road?

I would spend the extra $$$ and get the Dell XPS 13. You can upgrade to a 256GB SSD or you could just buy an external hard drive for cheap with 500GB-1TB of storage.
