Do I want to pay $2,000 for something that will last 3-4 years, or do I want to pay $500-$700 each year and get better specs/technology each year? I'd go for the latter, personally. It's so easy to switch over to new devices these days, why would I want to be sitting with old technology years down the road?

FWIW, I'm not an Apple hater. I have both a Mac and a PC on my desk for work. I have an Android phone and an iPad. To each their own, but I don't like the idea of giving Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. what they want and being exclusive to one digital "ecosystem". That's when they really have you by the balls.

Doesn't that seem like a scam? Add a few meaningless features and boom v2.0 or cool new name and slap an extra $200 on it. Apples MO
Who's talking about paying $200 more? What I was saying doesn't involve a price increase every year. Let's say you spend $600 on a laptop today. A year from now, $600 will get you better specs. IF you wanted to/needed to buy a new PC laptop every year, in about 3 years you would have finally paid as much as you would have paid for a Mac with the same specs as your original one 3 years ago. But now you'd have a newer one with much better specs.

Nothing on the calendar in London for the rest of '16. Maybe I'll just take a long weekend and lease all my electronics there. Lease a car, too.

Don't have the money to buy a nice machine in one payment. My sweet new machine from Blue Hippo is on the way though. It's top of the line, with easy payments.

Sweet, isn't that one of their top of the line laptops with the 386 processor?

Lenovo builds nice machines that they then ruin by filling them with bloatware garbage.

A lot like that, only your computer won't kill you and you can always buy a new one.

Why do you need a "nice machine"? Like, are you a financial analyst running CPU demanding software?

A video editor?

A DJ?

Takes a lot of Video RAM to run high framerate games and HD porn at the same time. I multitask like a boss.

I like my Surface Pro 2 a lot. If you ever have to travel for work it is sooooooo nice to have one of these mini things that runs full windows and Office as opposed to even a lite laptop. I hope it doesn't crap out on me because I will be paying for a new one. BTW it boots up from a standstill in 9 seconds so I don't think the 'gap' is quite as big as it once was. Unless you're a graphic design pro. Then...yeah, you should probably own a Mac.

I think I'm about to plunk down $1300 on an HP Spectre x360 unless someone talks me down.

My $2,000 Surface Pro 3, which I love to death, is falling apart at 46 months old and there's not enough super glue to hold it together anymore. TBF, I overheated that thing daily running dev instances of SQL Server. I know they didn't build it for that kind of abuse.

My MacBook Pro ($1200 or so, all of my umpiring/dishwashing @ Walker Roadhouse money) from senior year in HIGH SCHOOL still runs like new. I use the shit out of it too.

Bought a refurb Dell desktop. Put in a new halfway decent graphics card, new 24" monitor, SSD hard drive. Latest antivirus, latest windows. Had it set up just how I wanted it. Set sleep mode on it. Came back later to use it, woke it out of sleep mode. Pop, there goes the power supply. FML.

No big deal. Your new graphics card may have pushed it over the edge. Power supplies are cheap. Buy a bigger one.

It's under warranty so they're sending me a new one. I'm going to have to add everything up and see if it will work or just blow it out again.

I started buying refurbed off-lease Dell desktops for our office and have had good luck. Same computer for 1/3 the price.

To me it's not worth farting around installing the same power supply. Thing may have it's own design and manufacture issues even though it's technically enough. Go big and save yourself further possible aggravation.
