1,500 Drunk Americans Invade Canada

I've been living in the mitten a lot longer than this Port Huron Float Down has been going on and I've never heard of it.  Sounds like a poor man's Jobbie Nooner.



Canadian authorities easily repelled the invasion, driving back the Americans to Port Huron.

It happens every year, there have been various attempts to stop it, but that just seems to draw more people.  The majority of participants are local, the rest from around the state and some people who have moved away but come back for it.  Most all have some tie to Port Huron.  The numbers have varied over the years, from 500 or so participants to 5,000.  A 19 year-old kid (from Fenton) drowned two years ago.

The whole event really depends on the weather.  Most locals know that if you have strong westerly winds, you are going to end up in Canada and as such many skipped the event this year (around 2,000 to 2,500 people this year).  If there is serious wind out of the south, you may never make it to Marysville (10+ hour trip).

A lot of alcohol but less crazy than Jobbie Nooner and also a bit older of a crowd.  

The numbers next year could be huge with all the publicity.
