The timeout
Judge what you will about the playcalling, QB play, secondary play, etc....but there was one glaring coaching error to me. I'm sure it got mentioned in the game thread but was anyone else shocked at the TO call with a full play clock on 3rd and 11 before half time with 1:45ish left?

Re: The timeout
Awful decision and it almost bit us in the ass. You bleed it out and then call TO

Yep, I was shocked. You don't usually see those kinds of mistakes from our staff. Maybe TOC or another player signaled for it erroneously?

Re: The timeout
We had a very bad day in almost every facet on the field.

I think it was called on the field but not sure.
Amazingly enough Matt Millen didn't spot that error. Of course, he was at the time trying to drag out another player who hadn't played in at least 50 years to complete his Crazylegs Hirsch/Marv Hubbard trifecta.

Good Christ this.
I thought to myself that he was trying to become the next John Madden.

Watts Jackson caused it. Didn't know what defense we were in. He didn't have a great game.

We were actually on offense facing 3rd and long.

Oh, I didn't catch the first part. Yeah. Agree, staff didn't have a good game.

I remember freaking the fuck out when we called this TO and everyone around me looked at me like I was crazy. Didn't end up mattering at all, but why waste a TO on a likely stalled drive, in a close game against a running team when you'll likely need every TO you can get?

Fuck. Shitty game. Wisconsin was better. In an alternative universe I'd love to take back Scotts fumble at 13-6 and see how the game unfolds.

Yeah. To me the point was more....it was like 3rd and 11. TOC was having an off day. Chances of picking up that first down were pretty small, and we were going to throw the ball and an inc would stop the clock. So make or miss, you're giving Wiscy the ball back with a fuck ton of time and 3 timeouts. The right play was to let the 40 second clock run down to 1 and take your TO. At that point, even if you pick up the first, you're deep in Wiscy territory and you still have 2 TOs in your pocket. But if you wind up giving them the ball back, they get it with < 1 min left on the clock and they likely just go to the locker room. We were lucky they were about 3 yards too deep to attempt a FG at the end of the half.

I don't remember everything about the game but I'm pretty sure they scored 21 off of TOs, right?
The scoop and score.
The first TD was a result of TOC's int on the sideline near the MSU 25 or so.
And then there was the snap over Hartbarger's head that wound up with Wiscy ball at the MSU 5.
Take nothing away from that kid, he made some great throws, even on the rare occasion that we got pressure on him. But it was the turnovers that put us out of this game more than anything else.

I'm afraid this would go into the "what if CC hadn't thrown that interception to end the first half of the playoff game..." file.
Nothing would have changed.

You were talkling about when Wisky had 3rd and long, we dialed upo corner blitz, got home and possibly could have caused a fumble, but late timeout by the staff.
Then we change defense, only rush three, and Wisky hits an open guy for 25 yards. Only down 14 at that point and Wisky would have punting from their own 25. That was the game, set, and match right there.
How the secondary let these guys run wide open all day were as concerning as the offense.

ND fans would like to have their muffed punt back.
Bottom line is we controlled the los vs the, Wisky did it to us.

I'm not sure on this one. Bama, might have just got them more pissedd.

Yeah, turnovers made Wisconsin look better than what they are and us look worse than what we are. They're still a better team than MSU but I wouldn't be intimidated by them in a BTCG. Love their QB.
