I think Scherzer gets the job done tonight and starts to turn this ship around.
Don Kelly in at 3b tonight and batting 6th.

I would fade the Tigers hard tonight, but that's no fun to watch. Plus not sure I will be up for the end.

If you have MLB check out the brewers game. There's a lady with big hooters Behind home plate.

Hitting holes at SS, Catcher and LF are starting to show.
The O's JJ Hardy and Indian's Cabera are in the last year of their contract with younger players to take their place on the roster. As we close in on the All Star break one may be available as a rent-a SS for the second half.

Why do the Tiger starters always seem to take 20 more pitches than the opponent to get through the first 5 innings of a game.

I'd love to hear about the hitting holes from LF.GRR Spartan wrote:Hitting holes at SS, Catcher and LF are starting to show.

Unless you're talking about the 2 games started by Tyler Collins or the 2 games started by Don Kelly. But the rest of the games have been started by Rajai Davis (36 games) or JD Martinez (8 games) and both of those guys are hitting over .280.

Avilia had a great game last night, was probably a centimeter away from having a HR and had an amazing throw out to 3rd base. I don't think people give him enough credit.
I've watched a lot of baseball this year, and there's a lot of catchers out there that couldn't block the pitches that he does or take the abuse he takes.
Romine had a miserable night last night. 4-0 with 2ks.

Re: The official Slumping Tigers vs. The Fucking A's
Yeah I have no problem with Avila. He's' not going to hit for a high average like he did in his first 50 games with us, but he still has enough pop in his bat as a C and still hits some huge HR's late in games for us. As you said, he's been great this year behind the plate. On a broadcast maybe a month ago or so, they has reviewed all the various abuse he had taken that particular week. When he's behind the plate, the ball just seems to find a way to hit him in spots his gear doesn't cover. Also have seen more than a few times of him getting hit in the head on a batter's follow through.steveschneider wrote:

Tough matchup for Romine last night. He's not going to have much success against a hard throwing right handed pitcher.

Romine is brutal but it's not like Dombrowski expected to lose his SS in the spring for the entire season. He's just a band aid guy with a great glove, and any offense out of him at this point is a bonus.
Avila is having a great year behind the plate, and reportedly has great chemistry with the pitchers (which is invaluable). And I agree that he does have a knack for timely hits.

Other then this past weekend. Romine has been fantastic defensively. Way better than expected.
It really sounds like Eugenio Suarez will be in Detroit soon. Kid is hitting well and plays great D. If he lives up to the hype it will be interesting to see what the Tigers end up doing with Jose Iglesias, sounds like Suarez glove is very comparable and his bat may be better.

Are we still sure that Iglesias will miss the whole season? As a runner, I thought stress fractures typically result in 2-3 months of down time, not 6 months. Unless they're just taking no chances on his future and not letting him workout for 6 months.

One guy makes over $4 million, the other $500K. It's cool Avila almost hit a home run though..... He's almost hitting .231 as well.

Avila's OBP is 3rd on the team, and his WRC+ (offensive Weighted Runs Created compared to league average) are fourth on the team (ahead of Hunter, Davis, and Jackson). I'd say that's acceptable from a catcher.

Of the 18 players that are listed under catcher's stats with over 100 at bats in the AL, Avila is 6th in OBP and OPS. It's cool you listed his batting average though.kingstonlake wrote:

Avila has already thrown out more runners this year (19) then all of last season. (15). There aren't many guys like Yadier Molina who can hit and play D.

Has Avila's arm improved this year? Off the top of my head I can't recall him having better throws.
I think it was against the Chi Sox he had three throw outs in the game. Last nights throw out was incredible.
One has to wonder how many points he's kept off the board from blocking a pitch as well.
Also, to the poster above yeah it wasn't a hr but he still drove in a runner from first base. Anyone recall what the length was on that shot? It was almost in dead center correct?
Going off memory and after Googling o.co coliseum I think his shot was just short of going 388 feet. It hit right on the top of the fence and bounced the other way.

I think it has a lot to do with Avila being close to 100% healthy for the first time in a long time. Couple years ago he was very good throwing guys out and then had the knee injury late that year and has always had something hurting. Also doesn't hurt that Ausmus is now his manager, he was always highly respected as a defensive catcher during his playing days.
