I did not know that OTPT. I do remember a Willy vaguely.

I guess I could retitle the thread "Black guy who collects cans has passed". He is probably just as famous on campus as Black Guy with glasses or BGWG.

Nice to know someone stepped up after Ernie died. Seems like there's always one homeless guy everyone knows around campus and town. Back in the mid-80s there was a black dude we'd always feed and invite to our parties. One time he was dancing and pulled a half-eaten sandwich from the pocket of his black trench coat. Found out later he was a phd and former college professor. Guy died in the county jail after being taken in for vagrancy. He frequently slept in an ATM vestibule

That's it! Great memory, Duffy. My wife always gave him food whenever she was tending bar and he came into Dooley's. She was the one who told me Wendell was also a prolific writer.

He also played piano. You could catch him at the Union sitting at the piano on the second floor. He was pretty good.

Sadly, Wendell's alcoholism prevented him from reaching any of his potential. He was banned from a lot of bars near the end. Came in with no money, bothered customers etc. He thought he was banned because he was black and threatened class action laws suits.

RIP Wendell.

As I said on tTurd, while this is very sad news I am happy for DWags. He can now take over Willie's territory and give his family a better Christmas than they are used to.

My first job as a public defender I represented this older guy who spit on a cop after being harassed for sleeping in a wash in Lake Havasu City. The guy was a computer science professor at Ohio State and had a bachelors, masters and Ph.D. Dude was homeless and came to court dressed impeccably - not suits - just very neat and well groomed. His backpack was highly organized and neat. You'd never know he was homeless. I ended up getting his case dismissed after I threatened to file a complaint against the cop with the ACLU. Prosecutor dropped it.

Same thing happened to me once. I spit on a cop, and the public defender liked that I organized my petty cash (~$2000) in my wallet by denomination. He threatened to file a complaint with UCLA and the case got dismissed.
