Re: 2018/19 College Football Season
Five Teams Expected to Spend the 2018 Offseason on the Rise
MICHIGAN STATE (2017 RECORD: 10–3)
The Spartans used 2017 to prove that their 3–9 nightmare of 2016 was a blip rather than the onset of a new, lowly existence in the Big Ten cellar. They can use ’18 to reestablish themselves as legitimate national title challengers. Michigan State will open fall practice with most of its two-deep intact after entering last season with fewer returning starters than all but a handful of teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Felton Davis III, Darrell Stewart Jr. and Cody White will lead a proven receiving corps, and LJ Scott and Madre London comprise one of the most formidable rushing tandems in the Big Ten.
MICHIGAN (2017 RECORD: 8–5)
The Wolverines were responsible for the lone blemish on the Big Ten’s bowl season résumé, a 26–19 Outback Bowl loss to South Carolina in which they blew a 16-point lead in the third quarter. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had come under fire for his subpar record against top-notch Big Ten East competition before that loss, and the chorus of critics charging that he’s overrated will pounce if he doesn’t deliver in a big way next season. He should be able to, given the number of quality players returning to Ann Arbor from a young team that predictably took its lumps in one of the Power 5’s most challenging divisions.

Beautiful! I’ll have two kids on campus I get to see, tailgate to the wee hours at IM west, wake up in Kellogg, drive to Saugatuck or home, and be an empty nester for the first time in 21 years. Big weekend.

Opening against a team that did not cowardly drop their Aggies name and instead stood up to the auto lobby. Good for them.

Proposed new redshirt rule....would allow freshmen to play in bowl games.
Coaches want the NCAA to let redshirting freshmen play in 4 games each

It's take SheaSus at least a year to learn that complicated offense.

These preseason polls just regurgitate the previous year with little thought on who comes back. Especially with the Blue Bloods.
I haven't dug into it yet, but below are some knee jerk reactions from that Top 25. With a little help from this: https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/1/31/16950222/2018-ncaa-football-returning-starters-experience. Phil Steele usually does a good OL/DL and upperclassman breakdown as well.
Overrated
Oklahoma - The most glarring on the list. No Baker and 111th in returners
USC - Another Blue Blood pick. No Darnold. No RoJo. 115th in returners.
LSU - They have no QB, 122nd in returners and Shrimp Gumbo as their coach. For fucks sake...how are they in the top 25?
ND - Pretty sure their OL is gutted. They were men against boys most games. Their RB is gone. Their passing game was so 'meh' that their NFL talent at WR had 33 catches. D looks loaded though.
Penn State - No Saquan. Maybe even more important, no Moorehead. 116th in returners. McSorley gives them a punchers chance. OL is suppossedly strong. They can play spoiler, but they are 4th in the BIG East.
Georgia - They lose the best RB combo in the country. Swift and Fromm help but still only 94th in returners. And a bulk of that looks to be on D where they were dominate.
OSU - Who the fuck is their QB? 84th in returners. They Bama reload and Dobbins is silly good. But a high ranking for a team without a QB.
Underrated
MissSt - 8th in returners. Moorehead should work magic with Fitzgerald.
Washington - Peaked too soon in 2016/7. Flew under the radar last year. Everyone but the WR core from that playoff team is back. They win the Pac-12.
Baylor - I don't know shit about them. But they return a lot.
Arizona - Stud (college) QB. Slower/bigger Lamar Jackson. Lots of returners. New coach.
WVU - Best team in the B12, especially on offense with Grier and Sills back. Grier is my Heisman pick.
Michigan - When you look at returners, they aren't far behind MSU and Patterson makes them better. Peters would have been fun to watch :(. Still a lot of warts on O, especially in the run game. They should finish at least 3rd in the East.
Ball State - Betting the MAC team with the most returners week in and week out has paid huge divedens in the past. Looks like I'm riding the Cards this year. 2-10 last year should provide some nice value out of the gate.
Duke - Cutcliffe...lots of returners...looks like another early season play.

Seems pretty spot on. You can nitpick a slot or two. But it's subjective.

Iowa player charged with public intoxication after mistaking police car for Uber
According to The Gazette, the Iowa defensive tackle was arrested and charged with public intoxication in Iowa City early Saturday morning after attempting to enter a police car that he confused for an Uber. When asked by officers on the scene why he was trying to enter the passenger door of a police vehicle, Reiff reportedly said he "thought that was our job."
Reiff reportedly blew a .204 on a breathalyzer at the time of the incident. He was subsequently taken to jail and released after Saturday morning.

Scrolled through some of the blurbs about B10 media day. Nothing too exciting but I saw Harbaugh wants an 8 then 16 team playoff. I am getting excited for the opener.

I think 16 is too many. It gives Harbaugh exactly what he wants, 8 extra chances to get in.

I'm pleasantly surprised that there were no "rape culture" questions asked at Dantonio's press conference a little bit ago. Where you at Dan Murphy? Maybe ESPN is going to let that shit go.
