I'd say that it was because it was done only late in the 4th quarter. I mean, the cake was probably made, and the white frosting on it, but I'd bet Hollis or someone, with the basketball banner incident in mind, told them not to put a damn thing of green on there until the game was over.

Rewatching the game, I never paid attention to the crowd the first time around, but checking the stats it shows 47,092. Thee crowd shots I've seen make it look fairly good, like 2/3 full. Better than most earlier bowls.

Capacity is 70k, so 47k would be just about 2/3 on the nose. I agree, it didn't look empty, especially considering that even the Pac12 school was about as far away as a Pac12 school can get from SD.
