I've known people that try to do the cleanse, it seems like an awful experience. Never had any desire to do one but they claimed that they felt great doing it.

Sounds miserable. Make sure to talk about it as much as possible in social situations.

No because a simple google search or discussion with your Doctor will tell you that Detox diets are bullshit.

(But gHost won't stop humblebragging about how miserable he is and how great it feels to his mom club friends.)

However, fasting is starting to be seen as having some nurological and possibly other health benefits.

Intermittent fasting is really interesting. I'm far too active to limit my caloric intake to the extreme levels typically applied to overweight individuals.
Since I'm currently building muscle, I eat a ~500 calorie surplus with 1.5-2g of protein per lb of body weight on the days that I lift weights (4-5x a week).
On my off days I usually skip breakfast and eat slightly below maintenance at ~2000-2200 calories which is about a 500 calorie deficit for me. This is basically applying the intermittent fasting principles to a more active lifestyle, and prevents me from adding extra fat on my off days. This is known as a "lean bulk" among gym bros, basically slower progress in muscle gain with the benefit of not gaining as much fat along the way.
If you eat healthy and exercise regularly the benefits of fasting are less significant since you get similar/greater benefits from exercise.

I just don't see how eliminating three of the four basic food groups can be a good thing.

Most beef is grain fed. The "different" beef is grass fed. Tends to be leaner.

This has been my strategy to lose my beer gut. Cut out beer and switch to wine or gin. I start the day with steel cut oats with slivered almonds, golden raisins or cranberries and just a little bit of brown sugar. I’m eating more veggies than ever and I’m getting 30 minutes a day of intense cardio. It’s working out really well. Good luck!
