He's basically even in the polls, and Kentucky just elected a Dem as governor. So yes, I certainly think that a lot of people in Kentucky would care. It is hard to say if it would cost him the election, but politicians in tough fights don't usually make big, controversial decisions that goes back on their word right before an election.
