MSU reinforcing the weed warning with a letter.
Even though it will be legal.
To the MSU campus community:
One of the outcomes of the election on November 6 was the passage of Proposal 1, which will legalize possession and use of marijuana by individuals 21 years and older.
We would like to remind everyone that this new state law will not change policies prohibiting the use or possession of marijuana on any property owned or managed by MSU, and by MSU’s faculty, staff, or students on any MSU property or during off-campus MSU business or events.
Marijuana use remains illegal and fully criminalized according to federal law, and MSU is subject to the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendment of 1989. In addition, the MSU Drug and Alcohol Policy prohibits the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, and use of controlled substances, illicit drugs, and alcohol on property governed by the Board of Trustees and at any site where university work is performed.
Employees and students who violate university policy prohibiting the use or possession of illegal drugs on campus will continue to be subject to legal and disciplinary action. For more information, please see the FAQ sheet posted online.
Sincerely,
Denise Maybank, Vice President and Associate Provost, Student Affairs and Services
Vennie Gore, Vice President, Auxiliary Enterprises

Seems like a very poorly worded statement.
Why not just say it falls under the current no smoking policy?

IOW, our drug laws in this country are an effing mess. Do we really need these workplace and schools acts if drugs were illegal federally in the first place?

Campus has gone backward. We used to divvy pounds up with our dorm room door open and the RA checking in to see the buds.

How else is ELPD going to charge you with 15 different counts for the one offense?

Re: MSU reinforcing the weed warning with a letter.
Is smoking prohibited everywhere on campus? I have no idea since I'm never up there, but if so, then this is a good point, though I think they went for the Federal Law angle, which is certainly stronger than the University's policy.NigelUno wrote:DWags wrote:Even though it will be legal.

But if not, how do these laws that they cite work? They make it sound like MSU is unable to even choose to allow it on campus if they wanted to because they're bound by federal law. If that's the case, you can't really complain about MSU's position.

I don't understand the federal law angle. Is MSU going to have the FBI set up shop on campus?
And this statement...

Because MSU wouldn’t face the loss of federal funding if it withdrew its No Tobacco policy. I agree, it’s not well written, but it’s truthful. In fact, I would’ve preferred to see MSU remind students they face loss of loan and financial aid eligibility for convictions of certain drug crimes, including weed. Especially so with the current president in office.

Federal law angle is because MSU has to abide by federal law (all of them) to get that sweet sweet cash from Uncle Sugar

And just to answer Miami’s question, as I mentioned in my post above, it’s No Tobacco on campus, period. Smoking, chewing, vaping, whatevs.

I guess my point is there seem to be different rules in different buildings, regardless of whether something is "lawful".
And will MSU Campus Police be authorized to arrest people based on some Federal Law (even though Michigan law allows it)?

All I know is that I sent my kid the letter. She's in the dorm, and whn stuff like this happens, the cops love to make examples of some kids right away and publicize it heavily so others get the message.

Technically that policy is “tobacco free campus” not “smoking free campus” so that wouldn’t apply.NigelUno wrote:DWags wrote:Even though it will be legal.

In any city, area, etc., there are different rules for different buildings when it comes to alcohol sales, smoking, etc. You're just learning this now?NigelUno wrote:MiamiSpartan wrote:

And will MSU Campus Police be authorized to arrest people based on some Federal Law (even though Michigan law allows it)?
Also, it is not unusual for municipalities, areas, campuses, etc. to have laws/rules differing from state laws, and the local cops enforce the local law.

Sorry...that seems unusual to me.
