Some telling numbers of how in April, because of the COVID pandemic there was a real question if Markey could collect enough signatures to get on the primary ballot. As late as August there was polling showing Markey trailing Kennedy by 17 points yet on Election Day Markey won. I ended up on GOP mailing lists for this election cycle and it was fascinating to look at the messaging. Representative Ocasio-Cortez was there on numerous mailings along with Representatives Ilhan Omar and Tlaib and Senator Sanders. When VP-Elect Harris was nominated, suddenly she was there as well. They cast President-Elect Biden as some shadow figure controlled by these forces.

A conservative friend talks a lot about these people as well, especially Ocasio-Cortez. It's presented as a fear of socialism, that somehow these people will dramatically change the course of the US politically, culturally and socially. Now what I see, and point out, is the role that race, gender and non-Christian religion is playing in this disproportionate attention given to a group of new House members and a defeated presidential candidate. Sorry, but there is no way to simply ignore the reality of these factors in how and why these politicians get the attention they do from the right. It's racist, it's sexist and it's a fear of Islam. Throw in a geriatric Jew from Vermont and you've got everything that isn't Christian, white and male.

Ocasio-Cortez has an interesting backstory, she is intelligent, well-spoken and isn't afraid to defend the positions of democratic-socialism. That she is also willing to challenge the power structure of the Democratic Party makes her an interesting figure politically. But the right hangs on her every word because she is a brown, leftist woman. They fear everything about that. The left can idolize her because she's a fresh face. From my perspective, if you're handed a platform like she has been, use it for good. I think she does that.......
