The Anthony Davis Situation
I don't know all the details but that won't stop me from giving a hot take. I usually side with players in a lot of these types of situations but I'm actually finding myself siding with the owners. I don't think it's a good thing when you have a player with 1.5 years left on his contract just up and decide he wants to be traded to a specific team. I agree with the 50k fine and imo if he wants to go to LA he can wait until his contract is up. My take for AD is to honor your contract and play the game.

Wouldn’t that, in effect, be significantly worse for the owners seeing as the pelicans are a team that doesn’t have much of a chance of doing anything as is for the next 2 seasons? If he’s already decided he’s leaving then it’s to the teams benefit for him to tell them so they can get some value back.

Also, as far as I know, he didn’t say specifically the lakers. Just “a team that can win” or something like that. From what I’ve read the pelicans best move will be to wait until summer and trade him to Boston.

Not sure how you could ever “side” (if you really need to “side”) of the owners after the shit they have pulled. Loyalty is a two way street, fuck em

Not to mention, they literally could do exactly what Steve is suggesting. They could say “nope, play out your contract.” He could then sit out for a year and a half, I guess, but that doesn’t seem likely.

Yeah, I've considered that but I think it's pretty clear he wants to go to LA. What other team is going to give up a lot of their pieces for a rental that's just going to sign with the Lakers anyway?

“wants to be traded to a team that allows him a chance to win consistently and compete for a championship”
That’s all he’s said himself. Everything else that makes you think he said lakers is just speculation. Boston would certainly fit the bill of what he’s said as well. The problem with Boston is that they can’t do the trade right now because of some weird rule regarding the kyrie Irving trade. They have to wait until summer, but they have more to offer then the lakers.

I have no idea. I just went to the archives and nothing on there. I see he debates with Rod Beard about tanking. Going to give it a listen....

Ugh, that was so bad. The whole idea of tanking just seems so stupid but leave it to Mike Valenti to beat that drum.

I don’t know if you’re getting that he doesn’t necessarily have one team in mind. I’m not saying he doesn’t want to go to the lakers. I’m sure he does. But that doesn’t mean they are the only option.

I'm not necessarily siding with the owner but they are paying him 25 million a year and AD did sign the contract.

Contracts are just pieces of paper. Ask Blake Griffin if contracts are a two way street.
Players don’t care about winning, fans rip them. Players care about winning, fans rip them. In the end, fans are just fucking stupid.

Every team that has traded a player? It’s inconceivable to me how people think players should suffer through shitty organizations because of contracts but teams can dump anyone they want.

I got ya. I guess my take would be that's just the nature of the beast for most players but the ones that have leverage can put trade clauses in their contracts. They are still paying the players though. What Anthony is doing is different imo.

Suffer? Sorry but I don't think guys like Davis and Griffin are persecuted while making 100 million dollars. C'mon OTPT. Pick a new martyr.

Hey otpt in soccer players don’t get traded and they have to agree to whatever move happens. They can just stay if they want (though that’s not typically advisable.) also trades aren’t really a thing and players are just moved with money. Also it’s not entirely uncommon for a player to force their way out when they want out. It’s interesting.
Really, once you dig into it, it’s a much more capitalist system. American sports are ironically more of a communist type system where the owners control the means of production and there are salary caps and trades have to be “fair”. It’s an interesting thing to consider once you understand the dynamics of how the systems work.
