MSU hit by ransomware gang
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/michigan-state-university-hit-by-ransomware-gang/
The operators of the NetWalker (Mailto) ransomware have announced today that they've infected the network of Michigan State University, one of the US' oldest educational institutes.
The ransomware gang has given MSU administrators a week to pay an undisclosed ransom demand to decrypt their files.
In case MSU officials refuse to pay or choose to restore from backups, the ransomware gang is prepared to leak documents stolen from the university's network on a special website the group is operating on the dark web.
NetWalker operators have already published five images on the site to support their claims. These include two images showing a directory structure allegedly from the university's network, a passport scan for a student, and two scans of Michigan State financial documents.

Re: MSU hit by ransomware gang
Don't think it was this same "gang" - but late last year there was a string of hospitals down south that got hacked for money and ended up having to pay out because they couldn't get into their computer systems to take on patients

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University will not pay a ransom demanded by a hacker threatening to publish financial documents and personal information stole from the university.
MSU is still investigating what was compromised during a Memorial Day breach and will notify those who might be affected, according to an MSU press release.
The intrusion affected the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
MSU IT staff took the impacted servers and work stations offline to prevent any further exposure, MSU Spokesperson Dan Olsen said.
“First and foremost, our priority is determining what information was compromised and then working with anyone who may have been affected to provide them with the appropriate support,” said MSU Chief Information Officer Melissa Woo, in the press release. “The safety and security of our IT systems and the people who use them are of paramount importance to MSU. It is why MSU continues to work diligently to strengthen and improve our information security systems and share best practices with our campus community.”
The hacker demanded an unspecified ransom, but MSU will not be paying it. Olsen did not know the amount of the ransom.
“It is important to remember that these are criminal acts being carried out by individuals seeking nothing more than an opportunity to earn a quick buck at any person or entity’s expense,” said MSU Police Chief Kelly Roudebush in the press release. “Paying cyber-intrusion ransoms perpetuates these crimes and provides an opportunity for the group to live another day and prey upon another victim.”
EdScoop reported the ransomware attack on May 27 and provided screenshots from a blog on the dark web, showing what appear to be a student's passport, MSU financial documents and files from the MSU network, as well as a countdown that had about one week remaining as of May 27.
