Re: Nelson Mandela Day
Nelson Mandela loved him some Spice Girls. I sure hope he got the full starfucker treatment.

Asked for his feelings on meeting the Spice Girls in 1997 – shortly after Mel B had compared their "girl power quest" with the anti-apartheid movement – Nelson Mandela obliged. "I don't want to be emotional," he explained, "but this is one of the greatest moments of my life."

Of course, all objective analysis and evidence of life in S.A. today is meaningless when compared to the social justice achieved. I mean- I'd hate to spoil someone's slobbering liberal love affair with a mythical figure, but perhaps a quick read of the linked article may enlighten.
If you are the type to wear Nelson Mandela and Che Guevara T-shirts I'm sure you don't feel the need listen to anyone on the subject but MSNBC, a musician or actor and actual analysis and critical thinking are out of the question.

Re: Nelson Mandela Day
I saw nothing negative about Mandela in that piece beyond the reference that he was in the communist party (if you consider that negative. I don't). There are some problems in SA. This is not new to me.

Re: Nelson Mandela Day
I never fully understood the aura surrounding Nelson Mandela as if he was some type of mythic figure.
Sure, Nelson Mandelas life was inspirational and he most definitely lived a tragic yet fulfilling life. His personal triumphs however served no precedent in his ruling as President of South Africa. The South African people were actually safer under apartheid rule. Death and crime in South Africa skyrocketed under Mandelas rule and South Africa's economy suffered tremendously under his leadership.
Do I respect Mandela as a human being? Of course. But to say his Presidency was anything more than sub-par is a fallacy.

Some Problems? That's like saying Brady Hoke has some weight problems.
The ANC domination of SA has made it the hell-hole it is today.

Exactly. Why do people want to take down icons? Nobody's perfect, but what he did was prevent full-scale revolution in that country and facilitated a peaceful transfer of power (WHICH NEVER FUCKING HAPPENS). So really, Jethro, the condition of the country economically right now is completely irrelevant to who the great man was. BTW, I started this thread because Nelson Mandela day reminded me of Dave Chappelle, not to have a discussion on the merits of Mandela, who was a thousand times the person you will ever be.
