Overtime rules next year.
The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday approved four college football rule changes that will go into effect at the start of the 2021 season. Chief among those rule changes is an adjustment to overtime that is sure to ruffle some feathers.
Teams will now be forced to go for a 2-point conversion starting in the second overtime period. If a game is still tied after the second overtime, teams will engaged in a 2-point conversion shootout, similar to how hockey games are decided with penalty shots.

Why? What was wrong with the current rules?

This doesn't bother me at all. Anything that forces football coaches to go for two more often is good in my book.

I'm reading this that after the second overtime, all they'll do is line up at the 2 and try to score.Cameron wrote:This doesn't bother me at all. Anything that forces football coaches to go for two more often is good in my book.

I think we’ll see some real creative two point plays I also see it evolving 4th and short “let’s go for it” plays during the game. Why? Because coaches will now spend 15 minutes per practice on them. They wo t just keep them in their pockets for OT. Way more 4th and shorts that are critical in a game than overtime games.

The 2 point conversion shootout thing is a little silly to me but it's probably pretty rare that a game goes beyond 2 overtimes anyway. I like having the mandatory 2 pointers start in the 2nd OT though. Those plays are always pretty exciting.

Yeah, I definitely misread that. I think I'm still fine with it.InTenSity wrote:I'm reading this that after the second overtime, all they'll do is line up at the 2 and try to score.Cameron wrote:This doesn't bother me at all. Will be more taunting penalties and flags for coaches coming on the field to argue with refs.

TV executives don’t like the current rules. It screws up the their programming schedules. In 2020 ABC/ESPN, CBS and Fox paid $1.4B. Money still talks.

Yeah, the 2 point shoutout is gold for them. 2 point try, TV timeout, 2 point try, TV timeout. Wash, rinse, repeat.
