The Olympics have started and I’m pretty hyped to get up at 4 am every day to watch and then come to this thread and post about it

I see where they actually are saying canceling these games is not out of the realm of possibility

Should have been postponed until 2024 with the next two hosts - Paris and LA - hosting in 28 and 32. War led to cancellation of the 1916 and 1940 Games, the latter also scheduled for Tokyo, so there is precedent. But the IOC is so damn greedy.

If the euros could go off with relatively no hitches (that one guy almost died but that’s not covid, and one team early in the tournament had a bunch of infections but it was mitigated) then why can’t this?

That’s a legit question, not a hypothetical. I haven’t really spent much time thinking about it. Is it all of the athletes staying in one village all together that causes the enhanced problem?

The Euros begin play across a multitude of countries, right? That might mitigate spread. This is much larger event in more centralized location, with the host city recently declaring a COVID emergency. I am not thinking loss of life or overrun hospitals, but there is certainly a lot of risk for transmission among locals and athletes.

NBA bubble last year was a stupid idea. They should have kept playing in their cities to keep it all over the place and not centralized

Probably easier to put a bubble around 400-500 NBA players than 10,000 athletes at the Olympics in the world's largest city, not including coaches, other members of each national delegation, and the thousands of paralympic athletes.

I didn’t know that Tokyo is the worlds largest city. I suppose that makes sense.

I mean they did win 44 in a row. Sweden is also legit. They almost beat them in a friendly earlier in the year.

Bottom line, they played like shit. Their spacing was atrocious. They were completely out of shape the whole game. Which is pretty rare. They are usually very good at setting up passing triangles with the center backs and midfielders. That didn't happen yesterday at all. To my untrained eye, the midfielders looked to be constantly out of position. Mewis and Horan in particular. Mewis was yanked at the start of the 2nd half, and rightfully so. Hopefully Ertz can get her sea legs back, and quickly. They weren't giving their back line any passing lanes to move the ball up the field and Sweden was just picking them off.

Rapino actually played pretty well and gave them a spark in the 2nd half. But the ball barely made it up to the forwards to do any work.

On a related note, there seems like there is a group of Americans waiting for them to lose. Which is really weird. Why the fuck do fans care how much a professional athlete gets paid? This is a age old battle with professional athletes and owners/leagues for years. NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL... all have contract disputes, lockouts, etc. I say get what you can. And fight for it. Because it is not going to just be handed to you.

Appreciate the interpretation. No doubt some people think it’s the same at CNN as it is at Fox “News.”
On a related note, it’s good to see a couple of the on-air hosts finally telling their viewers it’s okay to get the vaccine. One started out saying the virus was a hoax, and now says he believes in science and the vaccine. It only took a few hundred thousand extra deaths, but hey, it’s great he got there.
