I have a feeling behind the scenes things are already worked out. She pleads guilty, gets 10 years, there is a prisoner exchange with that arms dealer from Russia that we haven’t prison here for 15 years, everything is good. But who knows, Putin is crazy

Sounds about right. She is told to plead guilty so Russia can save face. Deal worked out behind the scenes. I feel bad for the other guy who has been there for 3.5 years if Griner gets out first.

The guy originally from Michigan? That’s a strange case. My gut says he really was there on behalf of one of the three-letter agencies.

yeah, my guess is that she wouldn't have pleaded guilty had she not already received some sort of confirmation of how post-plea events would transpire.

hopefully she can get back home to her family soon.

Russia/USSR was dodgy before and more so since with selective enforcement after Putin took over and is running a government like a crime family.

However one needs common sense and be aware of worst case scenarios if and when the government of the country you are visiting /working. In Greiner’s case keep anything and everything that might have THC on it from smoking in the US at home.

I have no doubt she was targeted but she took a chance to work in Russia because her team was paying her 4-6 times more than her WNBA contract. What she didn’t realize was she became chattel to be traded for a Russian national in a Federal prison.

...or pleading guilty and accepting 10 years makes sense versus the risk of a longer sentence after what would definitely be a sham trial. My guess is there are not too many acquittals in the Russian legal system regardless of evidence.

I think I heard the conviction rate in Russia is something over 90%, so I think you're spot on.

The Paul Whelan case intrigues me. If you dig into it a little bit it’s really easy to start to doubt that he’s not involved in something. I don’t believe him to be squeaky clean.
