Buckeyes Face Struggling Spartans

The Buckeyes' Miyan Williams did not have to share the running duties last weekend because TreVeyon Henderson was injured. Williams responded with a career-high 189 yards and five touchdowns on 21 carries to tie the school rushing-TD record held by Pete Johnson and Keith Byars.

Williams' production came against a Rutgers defense that was second nationally by allowing only 56.5 rushing yards per game.

"He's tough. He's rugged and he's a violent, violent player," Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford said of Williams.

CJ Stroud is about to be wonderful again.

Michigan State really does have just enough to make this a ballgame, but the secondary has been abysmal over the last three weeks.

Michael Penix Jr. was all of a sudden a Heisman candidate after the Washington game, Tanner Morgan hit 89% of his passes – over 90% if you could the one interception – in Minnesota’s easy win, and Taulia Tagovailoa and company rolled for well over 300 yards in the Maryland victory.

There will be a few moments when this will seem like it could be interesting, and then bam, bam, bam – Stroud will hit a few good throws and that will be it.

The Prediction

When the prognosticators looked at the schedule, many thought this could be a game that might give Ohio State a little trouble. First road test against a Mel Tucker swaggering defense might have been cause for concern. However, it just doesn’t look like that will be the case for the Buckeyes.

While you can never take any opponent lightly, especially one licking its wounds after three straight losses, the Spartans do not seem to pose much of a threat to the juggernaut that is Ohio State.

The Buckeyes go on the road and win with relative ease and keep Michigan State winless in conference play.

The TOP stat is really, really sad.

Football Outsiders has a busted drive metric (OBD), which measures the percentage of offensive drives that gain zero or negative yards, and the Spartans rank 81st out of 131 teams in this category. With the Spartans struggling to win on first down and remain on schedule, they can’t control the game.

According to TeamRankings, Michigan State is 130th in the country in time of possession (25:11). And even when they manage to move the ball, their drives often result in turnovers or empty trips in the red zone. I don’t see how these issues improve against a Buckeyes team that ranks seventh in touchdowns allowed on opponent drives (DTD).
