while there are all these kids starving, the planet is melting, kids are being murdered at school by gun nuts, fundamental rights are being stripped away from our most vulnerable citizens by the white power structure, the citizens of Ukraine are heroically pushing back a dictator, etc., I sure and glad god chose to spend his/her time giving this lady a few toes.

The argument that given the suffering in this world "God" must be either a sadist or too weak to fix it always seems like a pretty good argument there is no god.

Or, a better analogy might be, the argument that there is a benevolent God, who is swinging on a swing set, while watching the house, burn down with people in it, really can’t be that benevolent

Honestly, if you dive deeply into the systemic philosophy rabbit hole you end up in the position that a God could exist, but not as any of the Western Gods.

However, this is based on cause & effect, or as the deitiests amoung the founders thought, the prime mover, which is based on an understanding of logic and cause and effect which is either outright wrong or on very shaky assumptions.

Really, as far as belief goes, the significant issue is the lack of understanding of how the tools of logic are wrong.

So on a related note... now deceased FIL always told of a magical story of when he first drank alcohol the holy spirit dropped over him and told him to be a born again. (Of course the inlaws changed/shopped churches like they changed their clothes so even that wasn't definitive, but I dirgress)
Found out later he threw a guy through a plate glass window smashed outta his mind and was lucky not to spend years in the clank... I guess whatever people need to tell themselves to not be on the wrong side of the law.

Maybe the shock of what he did really created a life changing experience for which he had no other intellectual understanding than it had to be God telling him to behave?
