DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Dearborn, Michigan, is ramping up its police presence in response to fallout from an opinion piece that described the city, which has the nation’s highest Muslim population per capita, as “America’s jihad capital.”

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud on Friday tweeted that city police increased security at places of worship and major infrastructure points as a “direct result” of a Wall Street Journal opinion piece titled, “Welcome to Dearborn, America’s Jihad Capital.”

Steven Stalinsky, executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute, who authored the opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he wanted to draw attention to protests in Michigan and elsewhere across the U.S. in which people have expressed support for Hamas since the start of the war with Israel.

Reaction to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece about Dearborn intensified through the weekend, as President Joe Biden and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined the chorus of condemnation.

The WSJ op-ed, “Welcome to Dearborn, America’s Jihad Capital,” alleged thousands of residents in the predominantly Muslim city, including “imams and politicians” are siding with “Hamas against Israel and Iran against the U.S.”

The op-ed was written by Steven Salinsky, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), a group critics say often produces selective or inaccurate translations to negatively portray Muslims and Arabs.

Lawmakers in both the Michigan House and Senate on Tuesday denounced a column published in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend calling Dearborn “America’s Jihad Capital.”

While Farhat said his resolution had broad support from the Democratic Caucus, the resolution was referred to the House Committee on Government Operations, where policies are often sent to die.

When Farhat asked House Minority Leader Matt Hall (R-Richland Twp.) if he would vote “yea” on his resolution condemning the column, Hall said he would need to read it.

The op-ed’s author, Steven Stalinsky, is the executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute, which has been criticized as promoting negative perceptions of Arabs and Muslims.

In an emailed statement responding to the Advance’s previous reporting, Stalinsky defended his column.

“Sadly, we have seen the tweet of President Biden and statements from politicians, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and a few members of Congress — Sen. Gary Peters, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and Rep. Debbie Dingell also denouncing the article,” Stalinsky said. “But I must point out – it is highly unlikely any of them bothered to read the article or watch the videos. The article is not political – it is about national security.”
