Lost our dog last night
4 1/2 years old Great Pyrenees. Great dog. He was diagnosed 3 years ago (almost exactly, early August 2011) with congestive heart failure. He did great until this week, we noticed his breathing was becoming labored.
Last night he didn't want to get up. Our Newfie ran by him to go out and he just laid there, never laid there like that as he loved going out. He managed to get up (we thought he was going to just lay there and give up), went out on to the porch and collapsed. He then took his last breathe in my wife's arms.
Amazing how much it hurts and how much we miss him. We've lost 4 other dogs since 1999, and it never gets any easier.
He was an incredible loving, sweet dog that could become ferocious the minute he detected a threat. A trademark of the breed and one of the reason I will have a Great Pyr in my life for the rest of my life.
Hug your pets for me today!
RIP Apollo 2010-2014.

I'm very sorry , man. I've done it twice in the last three years - and based on your posts, you've been through it even more.
Really stings and sucks. Time is the only cure. Chin up , recall good times and be strong.
Awful fucking thing to endure. This too. Shall pass.

Re: Lost our dog last night
That sucks man, sorry to here. Post a pic of that bad boy.
We've had to put down two, Ozzie & Sambuca. Sambuca was very similar. She had arthritis and other shit going on. The night before she past, she was very clinging and kinda whiny (more so than usual). I just assumed she was in pain from the arthritis. Next morning she seemed OK, but the wife made an appointment for the vet anyway. I went on a sales call. Later in the afternoon the wife calls and says she is in bad shape, heavy breathing, won't get up. I race home, doesn't look good, but she perks up as soon as she see me, all happy and shit. We hop in the car, I'm in the back cargo area holding on to her and her body shuts down. She never woke up again. Tried to resuscitate at the vet, no dice. It was almost like once she saw me, she could just let go. Fucking sucked. She was 11 and we knew her days were numbered because of arthritis, but we were not prepared for it to happen all of the sudden on that day.
We adopted Ozzie at the same time. But she was a little tank. She lived till 15. Finally she couldn't get up and down any more and lost all control over her bladder. For 6 months we dealt with her waking up with piss all over herself and the carpet. We had to make a decision. Tough as hell. We actually had a date picked, but canceled and waited another month. It just got so bad that you had to lift her up and she would be soaked in pee. Her quality of life was zero. Still, walking a dog into the vet to get the blue juice was rough.
Now we have a 5 year old retriever/shepard mix named River. He loves doing agility training, dock jumping, chase deer, awesome trail dog and listens like a champ. He's fucking awesome. But about a year ago we found out he has hip dysplasia. I've pretty much had to shut down most of that now. It blows for him, he lives for it. We are heading up to MSU in the coming weeks to get a consult. Really the only thing they can do is hip replacement, which in large dogs is not a magic bullet. Bottom line, I'm dreading the day that we have to make that decision again. Especially since I know he will be too young to go.
We also just recently adopted Leader Dog for the Blind flunk out. We signed up back when Ozzie was on her last legs, knowing that it would be a few years and we wanted playmate for River. After 4 years I have basically forget about it. But 2 weeks ago they called. Now we are back to two dogs again.
RIP Ozzie (front) and Buca (rear)
The current pack members River (left) and Rayna (dork in the red vest)

Sorry man. I've not been able to adopt the largest breeds because I know I can't take losing them every 10 years or so. I'm a puss that way, so kudos to you.
We have 3, with 2 aging rapidly. A good dog is pretty close to the best thing ever.
I actually got our newest addition from a guy on tCock.

Re: Lost our dog last night
My lab will be 9 this year, still acts like he's 2. He's 84 lbs and has shown no signs of aging, hope he sticks around for a while.
Our other dog, however, just turned 16. She can barely walk, needs to go outside every 5 minutes and constantly pees in the house. And I think she's losing her mind because she will bark to go outside and immediately turn around and bark to come back inside. And now she's got some weird eye infection. I'd say she's got about a month left in her, so sad.

Do you think you'll get another dog? We did when our golden died this past thanksgiving.
He was great but our current dog is the best I've ever had, couldn't trader him for anything. Would have been much tougher on us had we not "replaced" the golden, so I would recommend it

I've had one dog since I've been single and he's so damn attached to me, I don't know what I'd do if he was gone (although interestingly enough, I totally zoned and got in my car and left my friend's house while he was still inside the other day- derp). He's the best dog I've ever had. Baron says "Sorry bro. All dogs go to heaven though."

Dogs are the best; I know I'll be a wreck when mine is gone (12 years old and has arthritis, so probably sooner than I'd like...)

I can't begin to imagine. The largest dog I've ever had topped out at 75 lbs., and she was capable of massive piles. The idea of all that poop from a Newfie and a Gr. Pyr. =
