I agree. Hoping someone can find the video I've been searching for for the past 10 minutes. If you'd like to help, description is in the game thread.
At least JV is still in line for the W.

Re: Phil Coke
At this point the Tigers are doing him a disservice by keeping him on the team. Needs a fresh scene.

When I first glanced at the thread title I thought it said "Phil Choke." I am now a little disappointed that it doesn't since I think that's a great nickname for him.

Re: Phil Coke
Last night, 3 runs in 0.2 innings, bringing his ERA to 13.50 in 4 innings of work. The reality is that he has no ability to consistently or reliably get out major league hitters at this point in his career, but left-handers will get every chance to prove that's not true. Below and Ray are both left-handers and off to good starts at Toledo, but both are being used as starters. It's April and these roster issues will work out, but Coke appears to be done. I can't imagine that Ausmus is willing to use him after last night, and if that's the case, it's time to make a move. Heck, even Nate Robertson may get a chance.....

Re: Phil Coke
The problem was that even in his prime he was really only effective against left-handed batters. Now he isn't even effective against them.

Re: Phil Coke
Eh ... Below's WHIP is 1.71 so his ERA is probably an aberration. That said, he would be better.Heathens '87 wrote:Last night, 3 runs in 0.2 innings, bringing his ERA to 13.50 in 4 innings of work. Bless you Boys did a decent piece this morning with possible options. I'd link it, but I can't for 4 more days.

Re: Phil Coke
Agree with this. As a left handed reliever with a 4.31 career ERA, Coke is going to keep getting extended looks by the big leagues. I think he has 1 more outing as a Tiger. After that he'd be let go and someone else will snap him up. It could be that a change of scenery would do him good and maybe he can get back to his form for a few years ago as an effective lefty out of the bullpen.Heathens '87 wrote:Last night, 3 runs in 0.2 innings, bringing his ERA to 13.50 in 4 innings of work. Robertson had a shaky start in Toledo, but has given up 0 runs and 3 hits over his last 7 2/3 innings. I think he'll be recalled as soon as Coke gets released.
For someone who mentioned Valvarde earlier, he's been demoted as Mets closer. Started out without giving a run for first 5 apperances, then gave up 4 HR's over his next 3 games. Been replaced as closer by former Tiger Kyle Farnsworth.

That'd be by guess as well given that they'd prefer to have Ray pitching significant innings in Toledo over a bullpen role in Detroit, especially this early in the season. They could keep Below in Toledo as plan B if Robertson doesn't work out while other young arms get work. It still stuns me that two injuries, Iglesias and Rondon, have so shattered the plan going into this season.......

Re: Phil Coke
Robertson is my guess - only because it would be low risk try. You can cut him and get the roster spot back if it doesn't work.
Blaine Hardy is the guess at blessyouboys. www blessyouboys com/2014/4/23/5630902/phile-coke-replacements-detroit-tigers-bullpen

Gives up a 2-run single on a 3-1 count to the next batter (Plouffe)
It was the Twins 1st hit of the game.

Let me know when he gets pulled, I won't change the channel to the Tiger game until he comes out.

If I can stand to watch that long. All I know is he inherited a bases-loaded no-outs situation and has given up a walk, base hit, and walked the bases loaded again. Still no outs, obviously.

Finishes the inning with a strikeout and induces a ground ball double-play.

So he has now faces 24 batters this year and 12 of them have reach base by hit or walk.

On the bright side, that inning helped his ERA. He didn't allow a single earned run.
