Aren't both polls meaningless? Why does the TV stations still use AP then?

I would guess the coaches poll is less meaningless than the AP Poll in the eyes of the committee members.

Doesn't every coach have an incentive to vote up his competition to make his SOS look better?

Re: #6 coaches poll - 10/12
This is what it's gonna be for the playoff spots. Seeds not necessarily in order.
1. Oregon - Oregon will win out, and win the PAC CCG.
2. SEC Champs - These teams will beat each other up. The Champ may have 2 losses. The SEC won't get 2 teams in because no 2nd team will have less than 2 losses and they're not going to let a 2 loss SEC team in over a major conference champion who only has 1 loss.
Last 2 spots will come down to B12 Champ, B1G Champ, and FSU/ND - though I would not say the loser of the FSU/ND game is eliminated. The B12 Champ is probably going to be either an undefeated Baylor or a 1 loss Oklahoma. So imo that's probably going to give them 1 of those 2 spots.
If we are going to get in, 1) Win out. 2) Need FSU to drop a game to Louisville, Virginia, or Florida (they will) OR have ND lose to FSU and also lose to ASU, Northwestern, Louisville or USC (they will).

I think any SOS used would be computer based.
And if every coach is voting up his competition, then it would maybe be a wash?

Things are looking good for MSU to get in if they win out. ND is one team that could really throw a wrench in things. Probably better to have FSU win - even though FSU seems unstable their schedule looks easy.
...Of course there are like 10 teams that can say the same thing "if they win out"

The committee isn't going to care at all about a coaches poll done by people who watch very few games and/or don't even fill out the ballots themselves. They already have their own poll if they need to use something to judge who is moving up or down. It just isn't made public for another couple of weeks, but they have it internally.NigelUno wrote:

You don't think people on the committee would look at the coaches poll? And give it more weight than the media poll?

So, you don't think anyone on the committee looks at the coaches poll? Or will use the coaches poll in any fashion to form their own Top 25? Why wouldn't they? At least as a reference tool?

Re: #6 coaches poll - 10/12
Reading interviews with a few of the members, I get the impression they are trying to take the polls out of it. There is only 1 member who has come out and said he is looking at the polls and taking those into consideration. About 4 or 5 others have said they are working with statisticians and using other ways to come up with their own top 25. That still leaves about 8 or 9 members who we have no idea about, but I think for the most part they are trying to keep preseason expectations out.NigelUno wrote:

Because most of the committee is more informed than the graduate assistants filling out the ballots on behalf of many coaches? And where coaches do actually fill out the ballots themselves, they are still ill-informed about most teams as they can watch very few games outside of scouting opponents.NigelUno wrote:

I guess I don't see why former coaches and players with an understanding of the game would need a "reference tool" formulated by people who watch far less of the relevant games than they are watching themselves.

OK. You win. No one on the committee will look at any polls. Not even this member with stellar football credentials...

Re: #6 coaches poll - 10/12
Condoleezza Rice interview
Just throwing this out there. Sounds as if she is looking at the polls, but maybe it isn't the main influence.
Rice said she's paying attention to how much conferences are beating up on one another. In fact, the former national security adviser to George W. Bush has her own term for it -- "fratricide."
"It's actually a term from my military study background, which means when you kill your own forces," Rice said. "Sorry, that's what I do. So what it means is how much intraconference is going on. In some conferences, teams are constantly knocking each other off. ... It's two ways to look at conference strength: How much is going on within the conference, and then when you have nonconference games, what happens? That's all to get some ways to look at strength of schedule, to look at comparisons given that we don't have that much head-to-head. Obviously head-to-head matters a lot."
Rice, who currently is a professor of political economy in Stanford's Graduate School of Business, said she watches most of the games at home in her den. The three-week MBA class she was teaching -- The Global Context -- ended last week, and she won't teach again until January. She has one more trip coming up in a few weeks, to Mexico City, but said she would take a red-eye flight home to California to watch games again on Saturday.
Rice estimated she watches about 14 or 15 games every week -- live on TV on Saturdays and recorded games on Sundays -- and the coaches' cut-ups throughout the week. She is the point person on the committee for Conference USA and the Big Ten. When Stanford has a home game, she will watch other games on her iPad at the stadium.
"The hardest part of our job is it's hard to get good comparisons because there's not that much head-to-head," Rice said. "If you're watching the NFL, for instance, an entire division will play another entire division. So you know, I remember last year the AFC South played the NFC West. It would have had really good comparisons of who beat whom, and that makes it easier to compare. [College football doesn't] have anything like that. Since there isn't that much head-to-head, you need a substitute for head-to-head competition. One of the things I want to know is, if a team is scoring a lot of points, are they scoring a lot of points against weak defenses? Against strong defenses? How does that compare to other teams you might be trying to rank against them?"
Rice was well aware of the chaos that ensued in Week 6, when five teams ranked among the first eight of The Associated Press Top 25 poll all lost for the first time in the history of the poll. Rice said she does not rank her own top 25 yet, but she does pay attention to the AP poll and the coaches' poll.
Just throwing this out there. Sounds as if she is looking at the polls, but maybe it isn't the main influence.

Last Word Nigel strikes again, even changing the argument in order to have any retort at all. He goes from talking about the committee in general, to just a single member (while responding to me who was discussing "most of the committee" and "former coaches and players"). And he goes from suggesting that they will give weight to the coaches poll, to now suggesting that they might merely look at the polls (oh no, you mean they aren't sequestered)?NigelUno wrote:

Let me ask you, since your argument about the committee in general is now based on the ONLY PERSON on the committee with no professional experience associated with college athletics (and one of only two that have never been a part of a college athletic department), does Condoleeza Rice's history in the public eye give you any indication that she's easily influenced by outside parties?

I hope that when the committee members are watching the games, they're doing so with the sound off. If not, Connor Cook's footwork alone may keep MSU out of the playoff.

How do I get the last word by saying "you win"?
I guess you missed my post where I said the Coaches Poll was less meaningless than the media poll. Kind of a play on words.
Intensity linked something that said that lady might look at the coaches poll. It was long. I didn't read it.
I think I said they might look at the poll. Is that such an unbelievable idea? Good Lord. Get a grip.
