I always thought Lucas wanted to do 9 movies. That is why I don't complain too much about SW, as long as that was the original vision. Someone else mentioned that TV shows are great, and part of the reason I'll keep HBO as long as I can afford it is because of the original programming. That being said, I have become very picky about choosing a movie, I don't have as much time as I used to, and if I waste 2.5 hours watching something that I don't like, I'd be disappointed that I wasted that much time. I thought that Gravity was better than I was expecting, I'm not a big fan of Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock, whichever one was in the movie, but my wife wanted to see it.
I'm not a Star Wars die hard, but if I recall correctly Lucas has contradicted himself frequently on whether he originally envisioned the sequels or not. I think at one time after Empire he said he had stories for 7 more movies, and then later on claimed Return of the Jedi was the end of the story arc he had in mind.
The galaxy's best hope is that Abrams has ripped up whatever Lucas had in mind and is starting from scratch. Supposedly filming might be starting any day now in London. Ford, Hammil and Leia have all been spotted there in the last week or so.

Re: 2014 Movie Discussion Thread
I believe they gave Lucas some chocolate and sat him in a corner. They handed him a Galaxy tab and told him to have fun. Then Abrams ripped up all his idea's and merged Star Trek and Star Wars together to make Star Wrecks. Takes place in a worm hole.

That would be hard to believe. That'd mean that an arc that started so well would have ended with teddy bears dancing around in glee..

I'll actually disagree with this. I know it's typical for people to look at a previous age and claim things were better in a different era, but I think the movie industry does a pretty good job mixing in all the genres of film.. Certainly they bank way too much money into certain projects and don't greenlight as many dramas as I'd like, but those are still out there in vast amounts.
This is coming from a guy that isn't big on comic book movies and has seen every movie on the IMDb Top 250. The key is just knowing where to look (and not forgetting that every other era had a ton of crappy movies as well, you just don't see them or remember them now). But in the 2000s alone, I think for Drama you can look at a lot of Pixar movies (if you'll give into animation), plenty of foreign movies ("After the Wedding", "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring" to name a few), some great adaptations ("No Country", "Doubt", "A Single Man", movies have been adaptations forever, it's about the same percentage now at worst), some smaller budget films ("The Visitor", "Take Shelter"), and some major studio stuff ("Up in the Air", "Mystic River"). You can even get into combo genres, like Sci Fi ("Eternal Sunshine", "District 9"), historical ("Gladiator", "Downfall"), comedy ('O Brother"), Western ("The Proposition").
You just have to find where to look and how to weed out the ones you're disinterested in. But there are plenty out there.
You're right, you turn over enough rocks, you'll find something good. I mostly talking about all the comic book and sci fi re-makes dominating the blockbuster arena. I don't remember them being quite as prevalent as they have been the last 10 years or so.

Saw Blue Ruin (trailer linked in my post above) and it was really great. Brutal, revenge thriller.
Two films I'm eager to see are Locke and Under The Skin. Locke is just Tom Hardy in his car for 90 minutes. He has phone calls with his family and bosses/co-workers and watches his life fall apart.
Under the Skin is the new Scarlett Johansson Sci-Fi film by the director of Sexy Beast.

Watched "X-Men: Days of Future Past" last night. Fantastic. Probably the best X-Men film that has been made.

This one basically took a dump all over "X3: The Last Stand," in continuity and in other ways.
Bryan Singer returned to direct this one, so no wonder it was good.

So. What is the conclusion on 2014 for movies? I haven't seen many, at least nothing in the theatres. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy. Looking at Redbox to see what to rent, or what I should keep an eye out for.

Big Hero 6 was outstanding.
MockingJay Part I was really good.
Annabelle wasn't scary.
Dumb and Dumber To had its funny moments.
I'll stick to taking the kids to the movies, those tend to be the movies i am most entertained by.

Re: 2014 Movie Discussion Thread
I didn't see many but 2014 seemed like a strong year for movies. A few I saw:
Godzilla - Very meh.
Wild - Decent but too many flashbacks. That shit gets annoying after a while.
Gone Girl - Good but over hyped. Ending was blah but I suppose true to the book.
The Maze Runner - Entertaining.
Still want to see:
Boyhood
Nightcrawler
The Babadook
Snowpiercer
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Birdman

What movies are you looking forward to seeing this summer? We can obviously update this later in the year for fall/winter releases.
For me, it started with Captain America.
-Godzilla
-Maleficent (no homo)
-X-Men: Days of Future Past
-22 Jump Street
-Transformers: Age of Extinction
-A Million Ways to Die in the West
-Guardians of the Galaxy
-Neighbors
-Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Other than Guardians of the Galaxy, were any of these any good? Yikes.

Went to see Exodus with the wife and kids over Christmas. Meh. Didn't like it. The original Ten Commandments was better IMO. We did the 3d version and the plagues were cool, other than that, I would not recommend it. Watch the first one at home, with the kids.
Honestly though, it the last 5 years has there been a movie that you all saw previewed that you were just busting to see? I haven't been thrilled with much.

I can't believe nobody's mentioned The Interview.
It sucked, BTW. But I'm a damned fine American.
