Pulse Check - Everyone Please Vote

Started looking at the work involved in the Cullpening this morning and looking at all of those names that I'd be demoting with a 90-day window got me thinking...

In fairness to everyone who has to do actual work to maintain this board (I'm looking at you Heat) I wanted to get a general feel for where we are as a community and get a sense for how much energy everyone is expending trying to keep this place alive vs how much we're getting back or just love hanging out here. So I thought I'd create a poll.

Please don't read anything into this. It doesn't really cost anything to keep this site alive except time (mostly from Heat at this point) but I think its important to get a sense for where we are from time to time. So please let me know your thoughts. Also, please feel free to suggest additional poll options.

I voted for A. My only "gripe" (and it's fairly minor) is I favor a model where politics are kept off of the main board. It was fine at first but it's getting out of control now with a few posters.

PS. fwiw I don't really care about culling or the geronte stuff, just having fun with it in that thread. It's true that if we ever really needed to vote on something we could never meet the requirements as it is currently set up, but I'm not sure I can really envision a scenario where we ever really need to vote on anything.

Yeah, I don't think the problem is political threads, it's that people keep bringing up their politics in threads that aren't political. In my mind there are 4 specific violators of that.

If you moved threads every time that happened we wouldn't have threads any more.

The issue that arises is the mod elections. We can't get anyone elected under the current rules & I think OTPT is the only one I still see around regularly. We probably need to reassign to some people who are actually here.

I would just change the voting rules to how we do it in the gambling thing. Simple majority of those who vote.

I volunteer to be a mod. I will promise to do literally nothing during the campaign season. When elected however I will likely wield my power with aggressive tactics that would make nedgo blush. Eventually you guys will vote me out, but at least everyone will realize the importance of the democratic and impeachment process on this board.

I went with the 2nd option. My main gripe is that I'd like to be able to post pics of poop occasionally. I don't want a dedicated poop thread or section, that would be weird. I just think a gif of a giant steaming pile of shit can be an effective response in many different types of threads.

Poop pics seem to be the third rail of internet message boards.

Kind of in the same boat, not sure why we have these seperate tiers, I get the moderator status, but the whole tiered system seemed to turn a bunch of people from RCMB off. I look at like we have a group of about 25 of us who regularly post and a whole damn bunch of lurkers.

I will clarify it for you to SRC doesn't have to be a broken record.

Seems like his whole vision for this place was a MB where the inmates could run the asylum. He was not striving for a parental 'dad knows best' approach here where he would make decisions for everyone to their benefit or detriment. The goal was to have the user base make the rules. Vote on mods, vote on bans, vote on rules, etc. The "Geronte" status was some kind of ancient Greek symbol of some sort for their voting council. If he recognized your username from the other board and you proved it was you, you automatically became a voting member of the council.

The "issue" we are having with the current model is that it is was originally set up where some kind of majority of ALL members of the voting council need to vote for something in order for it to pass. There are probably between 15 and 30 members of the group (out of what, 200?) that actively post here still, so no vote could ever pass unless the voting requirement rules were changed or the size of the group changed to reflect only the more active members.

I don't think anyone cares about being part of some elite level 'group' of posters. It's just so we can help shape the rules/run the board in SRC's vision, whether we care to or not.

We are finding that without posting restrictions, there's not a need to vote for a whole lot or moderate a whole lot, which is also nice.
