Would you attend the Super Bowl?
Would you attend the Super Bowl
Talking with some colleagues today and they were surprised to hear I don't give a shit about the Super Bowl and haven't watched a full one in since the Giants-Patriots game. Then I was asked if I would attend one if I was given a ticket (and couldn't sell it). At first I thought sure why not. Enjoy the spectacle of it all and treat it more like an event than a football game. But the longer I thought about it the more horrible it sounds. It is basically a made for TV event. Longer commercial breaks, longer halftime, no home field advantage, etc. Plus the security must suck ("feel" safe more so than being safe). Plus the prices for food/beer must be through the roof.
So if you were given a free ticket to the Super Bowl and in the area, would you go? And for the record the Lions aren't even in this hypothetical Super Bowl.

Would I go to the super bowl, completely free? Fuck yes I would. That's a really stupid question to be honest OP. Go every year, maybe not... But to go once for free? Yes. Of course.

Re: Would you attend the Super Bowl
if I was given a ticket and was already in the area (such as when it was in Detroit a while back), yeah, I'd probably go... I might head over a little early, hang at The Detroiter and make my way to Ford Field. Probably wouldn't be into buying the 16 dollar beers or 45 dollar commemorative pins or anything silly like that.

Re: Would you attend the Super Bowl
I went to the game in 2006 in Detroit. I was a much bigger fan/much more interested in the league than I am now so it really appealed to me at the time.
That said, despite a lot of Steeler fans in the building, it is definitely not a fan-friendly event. The in-stadium experience is geared towards corporate dollars and, as you pointed out, the television viewer. It was kind of fun seeing a lot of celebs around town that week and bumping into them in the stadium, but the game experience itself wasn't very memorable.
Oh, and getting in sucked balls. Security line a mile long and it was not warm outside. The tent they had set up only covered the last few hundred people in line and the x-ray/scanner machines.
Doubt I would care to go again unless I somehow became a big fan of a certain team or someone I knew relatively well was playing in it.

No. The line and wait to get in would suck. Too many commercial breaks. I think it's a better experience to watch from home.
Only way id go is for work to have access to events/parties.

Yeah, thanks for the invite, but I'm not going. I haven't even watched the Super Bowl since 2004.

Only if the ticket wasn't give to me by RCMB Poster "The Steppes" who is suspected to be notorious UofM blogger and known baby seal hunting advocate Jonathon Chait.

No thanks. Not an NFL fan and I heard its just horrible sitting there for the halftime show, security lines suck, etc.
Prior to 09/11 security measures I would have gone once just to Bucket List it, but not now. If I had tickets in a suite, that's another story.

Plus he's a lib.
I would go if someone paid me good money. There's a difference between free tickets and then attending the event free. I want all expenses covered plus 20%. Then I might consider it. Other than that, fuck the NFL.

Re: Would you attend the Super Bowl
I've been to two, 1981 New Orleans and 1985 San Francisco. Obviously times were different then on the security and the amount of corporate BS going on. I had fun at both but probably wouldn't go again unless the Lions were in the game and even then I'm thinking I might enjoy it more at home with friends and family.
I've also spent a couple SB weekends in Vegas and those were fun until it got too damned crowded.

Can you imagine the demand for tickets if the Lions ever made it to the Super Bowl? It'd be us in the '14 Rose Bowl times a gazillion.
That said, yes I'd go just to say I've been to one.

meh.. I could probably live with that - though I've seen him enough that a smash-up of a few "greatest hits" wouldn't do too much for me..Watch Out Pylon! wrote:

however, it would be infinitely better than the usual assault on the eyes/ears of humanity.

Hell yes, I'd go. I love sports, and watching sports live beats watching on TV 99 times out of 100 as far as I'm concerned (the 1 out of 100 would be extreme weather that makes it miserable). I don't get the whole nonsense that people spout about the TV experience being better than the live experience. If you put the experience beyond the game ahead of the game itself, then maybe you just aren't that big of a sports fan.

I would go, but the NFL is overrated as hell. I would be mainly going for the atmosphere.
