WTF is wrong with people nowadays?

Tons of people around watching and hearing what was going on a doing nothing. Absolutely sickening.

It's not a nowadays thing. Sadly, people were always like this. The only difference is people now have ways to record it easily and inexpensively.

I agree with Moose that we have always had societal and moral depravity. It's just that now it's a) reported more often via more modalities (24 hour news, social networks, etc) and that b) the Bystander Apathy is real. It's not unlike the mob mentality in terms of how we absorb, process and react to incidents differently with regard to external exposures and pressure.

none of this makes incidents like this any less tragic, though.

I found the story in the link that came after the one the OP is talking about to be sadder. Stop to get a bee or some insect off your arm and your twins fall into a canal and drown.

But that is crap design for the canal that the sidewalk slopes into it and there aren't any safety rails or anything to stop people from going in?

I just can't imagine the terror and pain knowing that your two 18 month old kids drowned like that.

And to have to relive it every day. To go through thinking, what could I have done differently? Why did I have to take that route, what if I had put the break on, what if I had waiting 1 minute later talking to the neighbor. Those canals, I believe it took place in AZ, are probably rarely full, still seems like a hazard.

the Tennessee legislature (yes, it's Tennessee.. so, ya know.. only so much you can expect) just passed a bill that would make toy guns near schools illegal. Real guns near schools would still be acceptable.

Were only 2 dudes involved, or were they only able to identify/charge 2? When I read "gang rape," I assume more than 2. Also, it would seem logical that the more perpetrators there are, the less likely any individual is to intervene.
