Re: Most iconic bar in each state
Was surprised to find I have been to three of these places - The Pink Pony, Slippery Noodle and Hotel Jerome in Aspen. They actually seem like solid choices.
They could have added that at the Pink Pony you can have a drink and sit in the hot tub overlooking the water.

Working on convincing the wife to move to Beaver Island.
I found 10 acres with 300ft of Lake Michigan beachfront for $80k.
I think I could build a halfway decent house there for under 200k. So far no go.
Except I'll be at ground zero when World War III breaks out... also known as The War For Water and also known as American Civil War II.
I have the same dream. I love Beaver Island. Could have gone with the Shamrock for best bar and Delwhinni's has got to be the best breakfast spot in the state.

I've never even been there... just seems like an awesome place. Some relatively affordable beachfront property, too.

It is awesome and judging from what I have learned from your personality you would fit in perfectly - other than it might be a little weird trying to mix in with the actual native Islanders. Incredible scenery, remote isolation, no rules, yet you can go get an Oberon on tap with a fresh whitefish dinner. Most of the Island is for sale and it is indeed very inexpensive property, because it is so hard to get to. It must cost substantially more to build with hauling materials over on a ferry so it might be more realistic to buy an existing home. Also, much of the beachfront property is crap (in a relative sense compared to the sandy parts).

I'm picturing Massachusetts. Hyannis Port, specifically.Blanch32 wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:just seeing the words "Up North" makes me smile... and long for a day of family, pressed khakis, blue button-downs, a crackling fire at night as my trusty dog brings me sticks from the lake.. all very worthy moments tailor made for Facebook and Instagram.
I think you have up north confused with the south.

that's the problem with the "up North" people that I have the misfortune to be around. I think that they believe they're on Martha's Vineyard or something..The Pantry wrote:I'm picturing Massachusetts. Hyannis Port, specifically.Blanch32 wrote:

ha. I've never been to the UP, but the family has had a modest cottage in west Michigan (Montcalm county) for 30+ years. That's up north for us. It's great because it's 3 hours from home so you can take care of it, and it's not overrun by shit heads like the big lakes. The Pantry wrote:Then, no, you have not been up North.Robert J Sakimano wrote:no..

Thanks so much. I feel very contrite. I'll be sure to modify my behavior, particularly since Kalamazoo is now up north for me.The Pantry wrote:Townie wrote:

I'm hoping to make my plans soon for any trips not fucking up north this summer.

Bob. Instead of posting here all day, you should get your work done on Monday and Tuesday so you can take the rest of the week off and head up to the UP. Not now. But once it gets warmer.

Yeah I would have to say "Up North" starts somewhere around Clare.
But no matter, everyone knows where I am heading by the "M-22" sticker on the back of my Yukon.

that's cool. I didn't know where we were in relation to the mythical "up North" location.. I just got out of the guy's truck and started walking.LooseGoose wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:some, yeah. Nice! You should check out some UP-ish areas, then... that's beyond "Up North"... much more magical, too.... things none of us have even thought of yet.... very mythical.
